Library fundraises at Parade of Garage Sales to beat rising costs

Strathmore residents are being encouraged to get out and shop this weekend.

The Parade of Garage Sales, will be held in town on Saturday, April 12.

The Strathmore Municipal Library will be set up handing out hot chocolate and coffee for $1, along with items for sale at their table.

Ann Horn, chair of the library board, said the facility got involved with the event this year to help with fundraising.

Career fair attracts Strathmore job seekers

Dozens of local businesses were looking for new employees at the Spring 2025 Strathmore Job Fair.

The event, held Wednesday, April 9, at the Travelodge was put together by Prospect Human Servies.

"It's an employer market, and job seekers are feeling discouraged. You hear from them about how many places they apply and how long they wait just to get an initial response," said Erin Fenton, work force advisor with Prospect.

"Having the opportunity to meet with the employer face to face and to have a quick chat, it really gives them the upper hand."

Calgary Stampede's Aggie Days to celebrate all things agriculture

Aggie Days will welcome residents to the Calgary Stampede to venture into the world of agriculture.

"With free admission for all ages, this beloved event, held at the Nutrien Western Event Centre and Agriculture Barn, brings the farm to the heart of Calgary, offering hands-on activities and interactive exhibits that celebrate the fascinating world of agriculture—without ever leaving the city," said a release from the Stampede.

Activities include planting seeds, checking out farm equipment, and getting up close and personal with farm animals.

Liberal Leader Mark Carney took his promise of making Canada an "energy superpower" to the heart of Canada's oil industry Wednesday, becoming the second party leader in three days to promise to speed up the review process to greenlight major national energy projects.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre made a one-project, one-review promise at a campaign stop in northwest British Columbia on Monday. Both parties are trying to convince Canadians they can ditch Canada's reputation as a place where big projects take far too long to get built.

Police investigate break-in at Bassano grocery store

The Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit (SADCRU) is investigating a string of break-ins across southern Alberta.

Police say they happened between April 6 and April 9, with the suspects targeting convenience stores, gas stations, cannabis shops, vape stores, liquor stores, grocery stores, and sporting goods stores.

SADCRU is asking property and business owners to be aware of the crime series and to take extra precautions, such as storing cash off site and making sure security systems are working.

RCMP search for wanted man last seen in Drumheller

The RCMP's Wanted Wednesday initiative is focusing on a man from Wheatland County.

In a social media post, police say Shane Jason Pentelescu is wanted for various crimes, though the nature of the crimes were not given.

Police say that Pentelescu is known to frequent Wheatland County, Hanna, Stettler, Kneehill County, and Drumheller. 

He was previously charged with possession of fentanyl during a traffic stop in December 2024. Police said that Pentelescu was also charged with failing to comply with a release order.

CGC Inc. recently announced it is looking to fill approximately 100 jobs at its new facility near Carseland.

New Francophone school coming to Chestermere in 2025-26 school year

The first Francophone school in Chestermere will open by the start of the 2025-26 school year.

The school, created by FrancoSud will be placed within the Chestermere Recreation Centre.

"The school will offer an education from Kindergarten to Grade 6, with the goal of expanding to additional grade levels in the coming years," said a news release from FrancoSud. "This school will provide first-language French education to Francophone families of Chestermere, Strathmore, Langdon, and the surrounding areas."
