AAFC Researchers at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre want to turn Canadian agriculture’s value chains into value circles.  

Dr. Emma Stephens and a team of data analysts are taking the most comprehensive look yet at Canada’s entire agriculture and agri-food industry, from the field, to processing and exports, to the end use by consumers.

"What that means is looking for additional value-added opportunities within our agri-food value chain through co-products and current waste byproducts to find additional ag-based resources," she explained.

Canada updates U.S., China travel advisories after recent frictions

Canadians are now facing updated travel advisories to the world's two largest economies, after Ottawa warned travellers who stay in the United States for more than 30 days to make sure they register as required.

The advisory for the United States follows another update for travel to China, where Canadians with dual citizenship have been warned to use Canadian credentials when presenting to Chinese authorities.

Carney calls April 28 election, parties kick off campaigns

The leaders vying to become Canada's next prime minister are officially kicking off their campaigns today, vowing to strengthen Canada's economy and stand up to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Liberal Leader Mark Carney has confirmed a federal election will be called on April 28, speaking outside Rideau Hall after requesting Parliament be dissolved.

Carney will be running in the Ottawa riding of Nepean.

The Nepean riding has been held by Liberal MP Chandra Arya for the last decade, but the party recently revoked his nomination.

Kings re-sign Head Coach Doug Raycroft following record-breaking season

The Agra Risk Wheatland Kings have re-signed Head Coach Doug Raycroft.

The news comes following the Kings recording a season-best in wins but were eliminated by the Medicine Hat Cubs in the playoffs.

"His dedication and vision have helped shape the team's on-ice success, and we’re excited to build on this momentum moving forward," the club said in a social media post.

Raycroft has coached the Kings for the last two years and is currently the principal of Strathmore High School.

Avalanche warning issued for Central Rockies following two recent deaths

An avalanche warning has been issued for several areas in the central Rockies.

The warning will remain in effect for Kananaskis Country, Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Kootenay National Park, and Yoho National Park.

Two deaths were reported over the past few weeks, one in Kananaskis Country and the other in the Lake Louise ski area.

Premiers meet with PM Mark Carney, call for end to internal trade barriers

Several of Canada's premiers called for the elimination of interprovincial trade barriers on Friday ahead of a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Carney was meeting with premiers at the Canadian War Museum Friday afternoon to discuss the federal government's response to Chinese and U.S. tariffs.

Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said "we need a united Canada."

Strathmore residents invited to take a taste of French culture

The Strathmore Municipal Library is hosting "A Little Taste of Francophonie" this weekend.

The event is in partnership with Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), and Canadian Parents for French Alberta (CPFA), and will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library on Saturday, Mar. 22.

"It's just about hosting an event that might get the word out that we do have a French program in Strathmore, and it's really important just to give people information about it," said Monique LeFort, co-chair with the Strathmore Branch of CPFA. 

Province investing over $3 million to renovate Strathmore courthouse

The Alberta government is investing $3.2 million to renovate the Strathmore courthouse.

The facility will close on Mar. 31, with all court cases being taken to Calgary in the interim. Construction is expected to begin in June, with renovations slated for completion in about two years.

"The renovations will help make sure the courthouse has the resources and space it needs to support modernization and help the justice system to function effectively and increase Albertans’ access to justice," said minister of justice Mickey Amery.

Strathmore council votes against bringing new daycare to town

Strathmore Town Council has voted against opening a new childcare facility.

The request to amend Land Use Bylaw 24-23 to allow the daycare was brought before council at a meeting on Wednesday, Mar. 19.

The daycare was planned for 416 and 417 80B Archie Klaiber Trail, next to the Strathmore Arby's. The proposed facility would have the capacity to hold 50 children with seven staff members.

At the public hearing, Strathmore business owner Jason Hollingsworth spoke against the facility, saying he is not opposed to the daycare itself, but rather to the location.
