Local U11 AA hockey tournament to hit Strathmore later this month
The U11 AA Wheatland Hawks hockey team in Strathmore is hosting a tournament from March 27-30.
This is the first time the tournament will be held in the town, and Jodi Koester the chair for the provincial tournament explained that to bid they had to put together a package proving Strathmore has the necessary means to host.
"We had to make sure we could accommodate seven additional teams which is about 300 or 400 people in town so, we have the lodging for those people. We have the ability to feed all of those people."
Ottawa moves to block 'predatory' investments as tariff war continues
Canada's industry minister is looking to block what he calls "predatory investment behaviour" as a trade war with the United States continues.
François-Philippe Champagne warned Wednesday that Canadian businesses could be at risk due to the sweeping tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
"As a result of the rapidly shifting trade environment, some Canadian businesses could see their valuations decline, making them susceptible to opportunistic or predatory investment behaviour by non-Canadians," he said in a statement posted to the social media platform X.
Man arrested after multiple warrants issued by Drumheller RCMP
A man was arrested at a traffic stop after being wanted for outstanding warrants by Drumheller RCMP and the Parole Board of Canada.
According to a news release, on Tuesday, March 4 police in Red Deer arrested Jacob Conrad Courtemanche in the area of Gaetz Avenue.
RCMP said there was an increased officer presence as they finished their work.

Captain of the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings says farewell
Joel Romano, captain of the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings, is moving on from the Strathmore hockey team.
According to the Heritage Junior Hockey League, players are not allowed to be older than 21-years-old. Because of this, Romano and three other players will be leaving the team.
Romano was raised in Chestermere and began skating at the age of two. He played four seasons with the Kings, spending the last two as captain.
Calgary police officer fired following sexual assault
An officer with Calgary Police Service (CPS) was fired after pleading guilty to sexual assault.
Constable Gurluv Singh was charged in December 2022 after an investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).
According to ASIRT, Singh groped a staff member at Blondies Cabaret in October 2021 with a group of other off-duty officers.
Justice Adèle Kent took into account positive evaluations and Singh's guilty plea but said that anything short of dismissal would undermine public confidence in the police.

Strathmore Overnight Shelter receives generous donation from local business
Strathmore Value Drug Mart has donated $1,000 to the Strathmore Overnight Shelter.
Customers would buy products from the store and then nominate non-profits to win a thousand dollars.
Gordon Morck from the Strathmore Value Drug Mart explained the process of how the money was given to the shelter.
"It's a program that we have through Value Drug Mart to support community organizations that are deserving of support for the good work that they do in the community, and this year we decided to support the overnight shelter."
