Firefighters, students, and community join forces to tackle hunger in Strathmore

It's a challenge that the Strathmore Fire Department is ready to take on.

The department is working with students from Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) to see who can generate the most food donations and help feed the need in the area.

"The past two years we have beat the school, but the first year the challenge was if we won, they would come and clean the trucks for us, and if they won, we would cook them lunch," added Strathmore Fire Chief David Sturgeon.

Jude, Pius, and Clara Jalbert were excited to come in and see how everything runs.

Pius wrote a letter to the station in which he described being excited to listen to the radio station every night once he got home.

"I wrote that I wanted a backpack and that I go upstairs to listen to my radio."

Jude and Pius are both interested in sports as they play hockey and baseball respectively.

Eastern Irrigation District pleads guilty in death of Brooks diver

Eastern Irrigation District has been penalized in connection to the death of a Brooks diver in 2022.

On Feb. 19 the employer pleaded guilty to one count under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code for failing to ensure an intake mechanism was locked out before a dive began.

According to the provincial government, the diver was completing work at the Lake Newell and Rolling Hills Reservoirs when they suffered injuries that led to their death.

Alberta cabinet minister Peter Guthrie quits post, citing concerns over procurement

One of Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s cabinet ministers has quit his post, saying he has broad concerns over how procurement contracts are being signed across government.

Peter Guthrie announced Tuesday he was quitting the infrastructure portfolio.

It came on the first day of the spring sitting of the legislature as Smith and her United Conservative Party government grapple with an ongoing scandal surrounding allegations of high-level arm-twisting and favouritism in multimillion-dollar health contracts.

Charity Golf Classic ready to strike a tee in Chestermere

The second annual Charity Golf Classic returns to the City of Chestermere this summer.

Last week the city announced that the event would be taking place at the Lakeside Greens Golf Club on June 26.

Last year proceeds from the event went towards the Municipality of Jasper for their wildfire recovery efforts, with the classic raising $83,000. Some funds were also given to the Chestermere Food Bank.

Younger Canadians drive trust in AI-generated information, poll indicates

More than a quarter of Canadians — 28 per cent — consider artificial intelligence systems like ChatGPT reliable sources of information, a new survey suggests.

Among generation Z Canadians — those born between 1997 and 2012 — 41 per cent say they see AI systems as reliable information sources. That’s not far off from the 49 per cent of gen Z respondents who said they trust stories on news media websites, according to the annual CanTrust Index published by Proof Strategies.

Liberal leadership debate kicks off with questions about threat posed by Trump

He wasn't on the stage but U.S. President Donald Trump's shadow towered over the Liberal leadership race during Monday night's French-language debate.

The candidates — former central banker Mark Carney, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, former government House leader Karina Gould and former MP Frank Baylis — spent much of the debate talking about the threat Trump poses to Canada's economy and sovereignty.

Carney said that Trump has changed since his first term and is now more "isolationist, more aggressive."

Farmers advised to watch for flea beetles and emerging insect threats

As prairie farmers prepare for the upcoming growing season, entomologist John Gavloski with Manitoba Agriculture is urging them to keep a close eye on flea beetles, an insect that continues to pose challenges for canola growers.

“Flea beetles have been a chronic test for a long time, and I would say just bank on the fact that they're going to be there in high levels,” 

He eXplained that ideal growing conditions could minimize the need for foliar spraying, but if cooler weather lingers and delays plant development, flea beetles could become a much bigger problem.

How many people used the Strathmore Library in 2024?

Last year was very busy, according to the Strathmore Municipal Library.

In a post made on social media, the library went over some interesting statistics from throughout the year.

In all of 2024, the library had 63,958 visitors, with 116,646 items being checked out. There are also 1,134 new cardholding members of the library, leading to a total of 5,150.

The computers at the library were used for 5,186 sessions, with 1,372 people subscribing to the library's newsletter.
