Town of Strathmore warns residents of skating on storm ponds

The Town of Strathmore is warning residents that looks can be deceiving when it comes to skating on storm ponds.

According to the town, there are two designated storm ponds in the area where skating is permitted: Kinsmen Lake and Strathmore Lake.

"Other storm ponds in town may look inviting, but they are not safe for skating," wrote the town. "Hidden hazards beneath the surface create unpredictable and often dangerously weak ice."

Drumheller residents reassured: testing says recent water changes safe to drink

The Town of Drumheller is reminding residents that despite the area's recent change in its drinking water, it's still safe to consume.

The water has a distinct odour and appearance, however, testing by the City of Calgary said the treated water meets provincial and federal health standards.

"The testing results show that any noted changes in the water’s taste or smell are purely aesthetic and do not pose a health risk. Minerals, organic substances, or sediment can discolour drinking water," wrote a news release from the town.

'Nothing is out of reach': Kings feeling optimistic as game three approaches

The Agra Risk Wheatland Kings are on thin ice.

It's a do-or-die game for the club. If the team wants to stay in the playoffs, they will need to defeat the Medicine Hat Cubs.

The Cubs won both games last weekend and are up 2-0 in the best-of-five series.

General Manager of the Kings Cody Holdaway says the team is ready for tonight's game.

"Nothing is out of reach. We've won multiple games back-to-back several times throughout this season."

Holdaway is feeling the heat as the important matchup approaches.

Strathmore High School is hosting an upcoming career fair for students interested in New Media.

In 2024 the school started the event to help students explore a wide variety of career options into several industries. Every month the facility focuses on a specific sector.

"This event will showcase the potential for careers in media, design, and technology," wrote the school in a news release.

Mayor Pat Fule reverses course on garage and garden suites in Strathmore

The Mayor of Strathmore has changed course on his opinion towards garage and garden suites in town.

The bylaw allowing the suites was passed back in July 2024, with the idea being discussed by council for over four years.

However, Mayor Pat Fule claims that Strathmore's housing environment has "totally changed".

Strathmore students compete for Husky Cup during ringette-hockey medley

Students at Westmount School in Strathmore went head-to-head for the Husky Cup.

The event on Tuesday, Feb. 25 featured ringette and hockey players and took place at the Strathmore Family Centre Arena.

The White Huskies defeated the Black Huskies 12-7.

"This event is the final big hoorah for the hockey program, and we started a ringette program, so they have their game today, and we end it off with a hockey game," said Kyle Tucker, who runs the hockey program at the school.

Tyra the Drumheller T-Rex is taking a bite out of the competition

It's an attraction that has helped boost tourism numbers in Drumheller for nearly 25 years.

Tyra the T-Rex stands 82 feet tall in the valley and is widely known as the World's Largest Dinosaur.

"From head to tail is about 151 feet, which is about half the length of a football field," remarked Heather Bitz, executive director of the Drumheller & District Chamber of Commerce.

Tyra also weighs an impressive 145,000 lbs. Since 2000 the chamber has owned and operated the massive dino.
