Temperatures drop over the weekend alongside strong breezes

After a week of warm weather, temperatures will drop over the weekend.

According to our forecast, daytime highs were above-freezing for most of the week. This was due to a warm front and the Chinook winds. 

Positive weather persists for Friday (Dec. 27), with a daytime high of 3°C. However, with 15 km/h winds, the air will feel closer to -8°C.

On Friday night there will be some clouds entering the area as temperatures drop to a low of -12°C. 

Calgary crash leads to death of nine-year-old girl

A car crash on Boxing Day in Calgary led to the death of a nine-year-old girl.

According to Calgary police, the crash was at Southland Drive and Macleod Trail S. and involved multiple vehicles.

Officers say the incident began as a robbery at around 9:30 a.m. on Millrise Boulevard S.W. when a pharmacist was attacked before having their vehicle stolen.

The suspect allegedly sped away from police in the stolen vehicle, running a red light which ended with a five-vehicle collision.

Gerry Butts says Trudeau less likely to remain leader since Freeland quit

A former chief adviser and close friend to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he doesn't think Trudeau will stay on to lead the Liberals in the next election.

Gerald Butts writes in a Substack newsletter today that Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland's recent resignation from cabinet dealt Trudeau a staggering blow that loosened his already tenuous grip on the party.

He says Trudeau was "unlikely" to lead the party into the next campaign before Freeland's stunning departure and is "now much less likely to do so."

'Failure is not an option': Fire-torn Jasper entering new year with hope and anxiety

This year, Kim Stark's kids took responsibility for decorating the family Christmas tree.

Ornaments include toy cars, puzzle pieces, string and a pair of binoculars — things her three young daughters had handy after the family lost their home in summer’s devastating Jasper wildfire.

"I have the most wonderful tree on the planet," said Stark.

"It's part of our story and part of who we are.

“If (the kids) are happy, I'm happy."

India alleges widespread trafficking of international students through Canada to U.S.

Indian law enforcement agencies say they are investigating alleged links between dozens of colleges in Canada and two "entities" in Mumbai accused of illegally ferrying students across the Canada-United States border.

A news release Tuesday from India's Enforcement Directorate — a multi-disciplinary organization that investigates money laundering and foreign exchange laws — said a multi-city search has revealed "incriminating" evidence of "human trafficking."

Malt barley will be a big part of that as producers look to cash in on the premiums associated with malt barley. Primarily grown for beer production, malt barley differs from regular barley because it needs to be kept alive before heading to the breweries and food processors.

Nominations for 2025 Chestermere Municipal Election open January 1

The City of Chestermere announced the nomination period for candidates for the 2025 Municipal Election will open on Wednesday (Jan. 1).

The city will hold an election on October 20, 2025, to fill the roles of Mayor and six councillors.

"These representatives are elected at large. This means they represent the entire municipality of Chestermere, rather than geographic wards," wrote the city in a news release.

The nomination period ends on September 22, 2025.
