New Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola products to have 'devastating impact' on farmers
China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) has announced the outcome of its anti-discrimination investigation initiated against Canada in September 2024 as a result of the federal government’s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, steel and aluminum.
China’s State Council Tariff Commission will impose a 100 per cent tariff rate on Canadian canola oil and canola meal along with several other Canadian agricultural commodities as of March 20, 2025.
Canadian woman returns home after being detained by U.S. immigration officials
A Canadian woman detained for nearly two weeks by immigration officials in the United States is back on home soil, her mother confirmed.
Alexis Eagles said her daughter, Jasmine Mooney, landed at the Vancouver International Airport at around midnight Saturday and returned to her home in the city.
Eagles said she was at the airport to greet her 35-year-old daughter, along with friends of the businesswoman and former actress.
Chestermere residents invited to learn about $4 billion proposed data centre
Chestermere residents can have their voices heard on a proposed data centre.
Representatives from Beacon AI Centers will be there to answer questions and provide residents with more information.
It will take place at the Lakeside Golf Club on March 18.
The AI Centre is being built to house extensive computer systems. The project will cost $4 billion and create over 300 permanent jobs.
The information session will run for two hours from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Community Mental Health Fair: Ryan Straschnitzki will speak about his journey following the Humboldt Broncos crash in 2018 that killed 16 people. The event runs on Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chestermere Rec Centre.
Nail Trim at Pet Valu: Pet Valu and Rescued Paws at Alpine Foundation will host an adoption meet and greet for dogs. Nail trims will also be offered for donations to Rescued Paws. The event will be hosted on March 15 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Chestermere police locate missing 16-year-old
Chestermere RCMP have found a missing teenage girl.
According to police, 16-year-old Kristine Wyborn was last seen at St. Gabriel High School on Mar. 13.
However, officers announced the following day that Wyborn was located safe.
Strathmore swimmer breaks club records at winter provincials
Casey Kruse, a swimmer with the Strathmore Silver Sharks, broke several club records at the Winter Provincial Trials in Calgary.
At the event, Kruse broke the records for 50-metre freestyle, 100-metre freestyle, 50-metre backstroke, and 50-metre breaststroke.
"It just means that all of my training is coming to a big success, and I'm knocking more time off, which is my main goal," said Kruse.
The swim club said that Kruse's "dedication to the Master's lane is unmatched", which she attributes to her love for swimming.
Prime Minister Mark Carney's government terminates consumer carbon price
Prime Minister Mark Carney's first move after taking office on Friday was to eliminate the consumer carbon price, undoing Justin Trudeau's signature climate policy.
Carney addressed members of the media after the Friday afternoon cabinet meeting, saying the government is "focused on action."
"We will be eliminating the Canada fuel charge, the consumer fuel charge, immediately, immediately," he said.
The order-in-council Carney signed in front of cabinet ministers and the press actually stipulates that the "the fuel charge be removed as of April 1, 2025."
New high school coming to Chestermere to help address growing community
The Alberta government announced planning funding to Rocky View Schools for capital school projects including one in Chestermere.
The site will be a high school in the community of Chelsea.
"This project will continue to alleviate overcrowding concerns and address the increasing demand for student spaces," mentioned the City of Chestermere in a news release.
“The Board of Trustees is grateful to the government of Alberta for its continued investment in education and new learning spaces for students in our growing communities,” said Board Chair Fiona Gilbert.
Strathmore resident shares results of Push-Up Challenge for mental health
It's been a month since Strathmore resident Taura Fox Walker took part in the Push-Up Challenge.
The annual initiative is run by the Canadian Mental Health Organization (CMHA), and Fox Walker raised funds by doing 2,000 exercises between February 11 and 28.
"They had squats and crunches that you could do, as well. The app laid out how many each day, so we had different levels of challenges."
Throughout the program, Fox Walker was accepting donations for CMHA, with the funds helping to bring mental health services to more people across Canada.
