Strathmore library saves local readers over $1 million

The Strathmore Municipal Library has given some statistics on how much local readers saved through renting books.

According to the library's Facebook page, $1,275,314 was saved between January and August. Director Rachel Dick Hughes said that this number does not account for digital resources or physical items such as musical instruments.

Five fun things to do this weekend (Oct. 18-20)

It's going to be a beautiful weekend, and there are plenty of fun events to enjoy in and around Strathmore.

Here are five events taking place:

Strathmore Cultural Resource Fair:

  • The Strathmore Civic Centre will host a special presentation as residents will learn more about the cultures that help make Strathmore home. The event runs on Saturday (Oct. 19) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

CPKC Holiday Train bringing colourful spectacle to Gleichen

The colourful lights and music of the CPKC Holiday Train are heading back to southern Alberta.

The closest stop to Strathmore that the train will make is in Gleichen.

The festivities will run on December 8 from 8:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. on 3 Avenue and Crowfoot Steel.

Tyler Shaw and Shawnee Kish will play a free show inside the train during the event.

According to CPKC, the train will tour across Canada and the United States starting November 21 and will run until December 20 to raise funds, food, and awareness to support food banks across both countries.

Langdon man found not criminally responsible for killing his mother last year

A Langdon man has been found not criminally responsible (NCR) for killing his mother last year.

According to an NCR review, on May 26, 2023, Audra DeMolitor suffered "devastating blows to her head" from her son Scott and died from her injuries a few days later.

Justice Nancy Dilts says following his mother's death, DeMolitor was charged with manslaughter. He also admits that he caused the injuries that led to her death.

Will Strathmore see snow next week?

The first snowfall of the season may be coming to Strathmore next week.

According to our weather forecast, Monday night is calling for temperatures to reach a low of -1°C along with periods of rain or snow.

However, Alysa Pederson, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says that it's unlikely snow will be heading to town.

"There will be snow in the province, but it depends on how significant the snow develops on the cold front that's going to be moving through on Monday night."

True North Society puts out call for diapers, clothes, and baby supplies

The True North Society is looking for donations to help people in need.

Amanda Vanderlaan, the administrative assistant and public educator with the society mentioned a few of the main items they need for children.

"We're really struggling to keep up with things like diapers, baby wipes, Vaseline, diaper rash cream, warm clothes for infants and youth, and even things like rattles and pacifiers. As we see inflation increase there is more of a need for services."

According to Vanderlaan, True North provides a vital resource to the community.

AFN vote on $47.8B child welfare reform deal doesn't pass after lengthy debate

First Nations chiefs have voted to reject a landmark $47.8-billion child welfare reform deal, reached in July with the Canadian government. 

At a special chiefs assembly in Calgary hosted by the Assembly of First Nations, 267 out of 414 chiefs voted against a resolution in support of the deal after a lengthy debate that at points was emotionally charged as they argued either for or against it.
