Wheatland County makes changes to electoral divisions

Wheatland County has made some changes to its electoral divisions.

There are seven divisions in the county, each with a councillor elected to represent them in county council meetings.

The new boundaries will be used in the upcoming 2025 municipal election.

Division 1 contains the area within the county north of Siksika Nation, south of Township Roads 240 and 250, between Township Roads 252 and 254; east of Highway 1 and Range Road 231, and west of Highways 56, 840, and 842.

The division also includes Cluny and Gleichen.

Agra Risk Wheatland Kings hoping to keep early season hot streak alive

It's another big weekend for the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings as they look to keep their early season hot streak alive.

The Kings will take on the Red Deer Vipers on Friday night at the Strathmore Family Centre Arena.

After that game, the Kings will welcome the Cannex Cochrane Generals on Saturday (Oct. 5). Both games kick off at 8 p.m.

Water pumps spray into action at the Strathmore Fire Department

The water pumps were out and spraying at the Strathmore Fire Department on Thursday (Oct. 3).

Doug Keeling, a fire captain with the department says members were participating in their annual sign-off for pump training.

"We stress that training is first and forefront right after call response here in our municipality."

Keeling told StrathmoreNow in past years they've had the water supply come out of a hydrant.

ALERT arrest and charge two people in stolen vehicle scheme

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) has arrested two suspects in a "complex scheme of re-vinning stolen vehicles".

According to ALERT, the suspects were charged on September 29 after police recovered three stolen vehicles worth around $380,000. 

Police say the suspects were exploiting the vehicle registration process, re-vinning and fraudulently registering stolen vehicles. 

Internet and phone access back for Rocky View Schools

Internet and phone services have been restored at Rocky View Schools.

On Wednesday (Oct. 2) the division said that a fibre optic cable was cut, severing internet access for students and staff.

Wheatland Lodge and Hospice project fails to secure provincial funding

The Wheatland Lodge and Hospice project has failed to secure funding from the provincial government.

At the Wednesday (Oct. 2) council meeting, a letter from Jason Nixon, minister of seniors, community, and social services, was presented.

"Department staff have carefully reviewed and considered each application, and I regret to inform you that the Wheatland Lodge and Hospice project was not selected for funding," wrote Nixon.

Despite this, Nixon urged the Town of Strathmore to re-submit their application for future funding.

Here are a few events happening in Strathmore and the surrounding area this weekend:

1. Puppy Snuggles

Hpups, a local dog daycare centre, is inviting residents to drop by and snuggle with some of their furry friends on Friday (Oct. 4).

According to the centre, they've got several puppies in need of a new home, along with a few farm animals to check out as well.

The centre is located southbound on Range Road 242 in Wheatland County, and residents are asked to contact the owner at 403-634-3156 for the address. 

AHS asking that Wheatland EMS return $4 million surplus

Alberta Health Services is asking the Wheatland and Adjacent Districts Emergency Medical Services Association (WADEMSA) to return over $4 million in surplus funds.

A report by WADEMSA was presented to Strathmore's town council at Wednesday's (Oct. 2) meeting. The report was read out by Councillors Richard Wegener and Denise Peterson, who also serve on WADEMSA's board.
