Sharp rise in whooping cough cases reported in several provinces
Whooping cough cases are on the rise in Canada, with some provinces reporting sharp increases compared to pre-pandemic averages.
More than 11,670 cases have been reported in Quebec so far this year, a significant jump from the annual average of 562 cases between 2015 and 2019.
The majority of whooping cough patients are between the ages of 10 and 14, a spokesperson for Quebec's health ministry said in an email to The Canadian Press.
The last peak of whooping cough activity in the province was in 2019, when 1,269 cases were reported, the email said.
Vote on $47.8B First Nations child welfare deal delayed due to chiefs' concerns
The Assembly of First Nations has postponed a special assembly for chiefs to vote on a landmark child welfare reform deal with Canada due to concerns about the process and a late translation of the document to French.
The Assembly was scheduled to be held in September in Winnipeg, but it will not happen now until October or November, the AFN said Tuesday.
RCMP respond to two-vehicle collision on Highway 1 and Range Road 262
Police, EMS, and fire trucks responded to a crash on Highway 1 and Range Road 262 on Tuesday evening.
RCMP received a report at around 5 p.m. about a two-vehicle collision in the area.
According to police, a white Ford F350 collided with a Jeep Grand Cherokee at the intersection.
Strathmore braces for intense rainfall and wind gusts
A special weather statement has been issued for Strathmore and the surrounding area.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to begin on Tuesday (Aug. 27) night.
The rain will intensify overnight and continue throughout Wednesday, with 40 mm expected by Wednesday evening.
Strong winds will also develop on Wednesday, with gusts of 80 km/h expected to hit the area before weakening later in the afternoon.
City of Chestermere sees financial boost with $3.5 million surplus in latest report
Members of Chestermere City Council met on Tuesday and heard a report from city administration about the state of Chestermere's finances.
According to Sandy Johal-Watt, the city's director of corporate services, a new report says the city's summary revenues and expenses by each department have seen a $3.5 million surplus so far this year.
"The majority of the variances come from staffing, salary, and wages. As well as the accounts that are associated with salary and wages such as training and development."
Join the Terry Fox Run in Strathmore: Kinsmen Park event aims to honour legacy of Fox
Terry Fox and his Marathon of Hope captivated Canadians over 40 years ago when he embarked on a run to raise funds and awareness for cancer research.
Strathmore has hosted a Terry Fox Run since 1997. This year the run will take place in Kinsmen Park on September 15. The Ampitheatre is the hub for the event and there will be a one-kilometre run around Kinsmen Lake.
Following that the run will continue to the path along Grey's Lake which is about another four kilometres and then back to Kinsmen Park for a total of five kilometres.
Success for first meeting of 100 Men Who Care in Chestermere
A Chestermere organization called 100 Men Who Care had its first meeting last week.
On Thursday (Aug. 22), the group gathered at the Chestermere Rec Centre, with about 45 men arriving for the event. The group is a branch of 100 Women Who Care, which involves 100 people coming together four times a year, with each person donating $100 towards a charity that the group chooses.
CCA narrowing down finalists in the Young Leaders Mentorship Program
Participants in the Canadian Cattle Association's Young Leaders Mentorship Program took part in the final round of competition last week during the Canadian Beef Industry Conference.
The group of 24 took part in roundtable discussion with the other participants and judges as they work to narrow down the group to the 16 finalists.
Jessica Radau, the CCA's Policy, Programs and Engagement Manager says the roundtable discussions covered a variety of topics from succession planning to biosecurity, building public trust in the industry and more.
North American beef industry leaders hold trilateral meeting
The Canadian Cattle Association hosted the third 2024 triannual trilateral meeting with industry leaders from the United States and Mexico last week to discuss some of the common challenges and opportunities facing the cattle sector.
Trade issues and relations were top among the topics being discussed with the upcoming review of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA/USMCA/T-MEC) set for 2026.
The group also discussing the impact of lab grown proteins as well as international engagement on antimicrobial resistance.
Strathmore's Westchester Road closing for road work
Westchester Road in Strathmore will be closing later this week.
According to the Town of Strathmore, the closure will begin on Aug. 29 and 30 between Westmount Drive and Wellington Cove.
