Husband-wife duo teach Gaelic dancing at the Strathmore Medieval Faire

A husband-wife duo taught hundreds about Gaelic music, dancing, and folklore at the Strathmore Medieval Faire & Artisan Market over the weekend.

Angus and Dolina are the stage names of Edam Dahmer and Dhanya Baird, a Calgary-based couple that has been touring the area showcasing Scottish song and dance for the last six years.

Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions have returned to Strathmore.

The City of Calgary decided to bring back restrictions as work is underway to fix the Bearspaw feeder main in the city.

According to the town, all outdoor water use from residents is no longer allowed besides life-sustaining uses like livestock or businesses that meet health standards like hospitals and restaurants.

Feds identify 56 government properties for conversion to affordable housing

The federal government has added 56 properties to a new public lands bank of locations that are suitable for long-term leases so developers can build housing, a move the Housing Minister says will help boost the supply of homes Canadians can afford. 

Sean Fraser made the announcement Sunday in Halifax just ahead of a three-day cabinet retreat intended to prepare for the upcoming fall sitting of Parliament.

"Making public lands available for home construction is going to reduce the cost of construction and in turn reduce the cost of living," Fraser said. 

Pride and paint: Strathmore’s crosswalk gets a fresh look thanks to local supporters

With the help of local organizations and businesses, the Strathmore Pride Community added a fresh coat of paint to the town's Pride crosswalk next to the Strathmore Municipal Building.

The repainting was a part of the Parade Paint & Party event held by the community on Sunday (Aug. 25), with groups meeting at the Strathmore Skate Park to make flags and posters before parading down to Kinsmen Park, where they began to repaint the crosswalk.

Calgary family’s big lotto win: $1.36 million jackpot paves the way for new beginnings

One Calgary woman and her family are a lot richer thanks to a Lightning Lotto win.

Ge Ann Bareng won $1,360,265 on the instant win jackpot.

She purchased her ticket from the Save-On-Foods at 70-3915 51 Street N.W. in Calgary.

According to a news release from Western Canada Lotto Corporation, she won her prize by selecting five numbers in the July 16 Lightning Lotto draw: 7, 26, 28, 43, 45. 

“I bought [the ticket] while I was out shopping with my kids,” explains Bareng.

Get your neon ready: Langdon's 80s-themed Walk and Run event set to return

The Langdon Walk and Run is back for another fun year, and this year has an 80s theme twist. 

The event will kick off at the Langdon Community Library at 9 a.m. on September 22.

Heather King, organizer of the event says many people have already registered.

"We have 650 patrons that are now registered, but all proceeds for the walk and run do support library fundraising."

The event encourages everyone of all ages to come down and participate.

One of the many attractions at Strathmore's Medieval Faire & Artisan Market involved historically accurate soldiers engaging in combat.

Hosted by the Historical Armored Combat Sports Association (HACSA), the entire festival weekend featured armored fighters entering a ring where they tested their mettle among a packed crowd of spectators. 

It could take months to recover from the rail stoppage

Work is underway to get Canada's rail system back up and operational.

The Canada Industrial Relations Board released its decision late Saturday, reinforcing the Labour Minister's order for binding arbitration and the extension of collective agreements until a new deal is signed. 

A statement on the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference website says they will comply with the decision, but will also appeal the ruling to federal court.

Canada to bring back stricter rules for temporary foreign worker program

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his government will reduce the number of low-wage temporary foreign workers with stricter rules, urging employers to hire Canadian workers instead.

The federal government announced today that it will refuse applications for low-wage temporary foreign workers in regions with an unemployment rate of six per cent or higher.

Employers will be allowed to hire a maximum of 10 per cent of their workforce from the temporary foreign worker program, down from 20 per cent.
