Rainfall Warning issued for Strathmore
Environment Canada (EC) has issued a Rainfall Warning for Strathmore and the surrounding area.
According to the group, heavy rain will bring 40 to 40 millimeters of rain by Saturday (June 21) evening.
"Scattered showers today will organize into an area of heavy rain tonight," wrote EC. "The heavy rain will continue through the day on Saturday before tapering off in the evening."
Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. The group also warns that localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
Officials say one dead, three hurt in rockfall at Banff National Park hiking trail
Police and parks officials say one person was killed and three were injured in a rockfall at a remote hiking trail in Banff National Park.
They say the search continues to confirm no other hikers are missing following the early afternoon tragedy at Bow Glacier Falls, north of Lake Louise.
One person had been found dead and the extent of the injuries to the other three is unknown.
Two of the three injured were taken to a Calgary hospital by STARS air ambulance and the third went to hospital by ground ambulance.
Police, rescuers respond as rock slide hits hikers in Banff; injuries undetermined
Rescue crews, police and paramedics scrambled to a remote region of Banff National Park late Thursday amid reports that a group of hikers were hit by a rock slide, causing possible injuries and deaths.
“The initial report indicated there were multiple hikers and there may be serious injuries and/or fatalities,” RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said in a news release.
Parks Canada, in a statement said, it is responding to a report of "a serious rockfall incident with involvement near Bow Glacier Falls in Banff National Park."
Strathmore RCMP arrest suspect for theft of 17 vehicles
A man from Siksika Nation has been laid 20 charges in relation to a series of vehicle thefts.
Southern Alberta RCMP Crime Reduction Unit (SAD CRU) worked with RCMP officers from Vulcan, High River, Airdrie, Gleichen, and Strathmore in the investigation.
On June 16, Strathmore and Gleichen RCMP arrested suspect 25-year-old Charlie Wolfear after the theft of a bait truck. The RCMP tracked the truck into Strathmore, and SAD CRU arrested Wolfear after a foot chase.
What's going on for construction season this month?
Several construction projects are taking place this June in Strathmore and several surrounding areas.
These are the projects that are in progress and upcoming this month:
Strathmore
Constructions crews will be working to upgrade underground utilities below Thistle Way.
The projects will start June 23 and is estimated to finish on Aug. 6.
Archie Klaiber Trail and Ridge Road will also undergo construction and have lane closures. Crews will be milling and paving these roads from June 25 to 27.
Strathmore Musical Arts Society rewarded $3,360
Golden West Broadcasting donated $3,360 to the Strathmore Musical Arts Society.
The funds will go towards promoting the group's music programs.
"It'll help us to research and bring in top quality music into Strathmore," Linda Storkson said, who founded the society 29 years ago. "It also helps us to reach out to different nonprofits in the area."
The Musical Arts Society's goal is to promote music and culture in the community.
"Our moto is top quality music in a dinner theatre atmosphere. Good food, good music, and lots of fun," Storkson added.
Local Greek restaurant to celebrate one-year anniversary
Mama's Greek Kouzina is celebrating its one-year anniversary.
A community party will be hosted at the local restaurant on Sunday (June 22) from 1 to 6 p.m.

Ottawa shows no signs of limiting MAID after UN panel calls for reversal
Ottawa is giving no sign that it intends to amend existing legislation on medical assistance in dying — something a UN committee called for earlier this spring.
The federal minister responsible for disabilities spoke at a hearing of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities last week, about two months after the committee called on Canada to repeal the 2021 law that expanded eligibility for assisted dying to those whose deaths were not reasonably foreseeable.

Advance voting opens in Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills by-election
Voters in Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills can now vote for their next MLA.
The by-election was triggered after former MLA and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Nathan Cooper resigned.
Voting opened on June 17 and will run until June 21.
Currently, four candidates are vying for the position.
