Watch: Upwards of 20 vehicles involved in collision near Crossfield
At 10:35 p.m. on Tuesday, December 27, Airdrie RCMP responded to a multi-vehicle collision, on Highway 2 north of Veterans Boulevard at Highway 72 in Rocky View County (Highway 2 Northbound at Range Road 293). On Wednesday, December 28, the RCMP confirmed one fatality.
First responders are assisting over a dozen vehicles involved in this event. Vehicle fires and injuries are reported.
Update: Two-semi trucks on fire near Crossfield; highway closed
Major delays are expected Northbound on the QEII highway at the junction of Highway 72 (Range Road 293) near Crossfield due to a multi-vehicle collision. There are reports of two semi-trucks that are engulfed in flames. All lanes are closed and motorists are asked to find an alternate route.
The Airdrie Professional Firefighters Association stated in a social media post that the highway at Veteran's Boulevard in Airdrie has also been shut down.
There are no details on injuries. Emergency crews are currently on the scene.
RCMP warning motorists of poor driving conditions
RCMP is warning the public of poor road conditions along Highway 2 between Red Deer and Airdrie.
"Black ice, freezing rain and changing conditions are affecting visibility and surface traction on the road. Additional reports of poor road conditions are identified in the detachment areas of Redcliff and Strathmore," an RCMP press release stated. "Please be cautious if you are travelling in the area."
Fog adding to poor visibility on roads around Airdrie
Airdrie has been placed under a fog advisory by Environment and Climate Change Canada.
According to Environment Canada, areas of dense fog have developed in areas north and east of the Calgary metro area with some drizzle also present in these fog patches, which could freeze on surfaces that remain below zero. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.
"If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance."
Update: Freezing rain warning may bring trouble for motorists
The freezing rain warning has ended, though a fog advisory is in effect for Airdrie and the surrounding areas.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, a freezing rain warning was for Airdrie and the surrounding areas.
"Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions," a special weather statement from Environment Canada read.
Although the main precipitation band moved out of Calgary, some freezing rain might form around noon near the Foothills and affect the region.
Shoppers causing traffic delays
Traffic is backed up in both directions on the QE2 and into Calgary along Deerfoot Trail.
The cause seems to be shoppers trying to get into save some cash with boxing day deals at Crossiron Mall.
The turn onto Deerfoot Trail from Stoney Trail is at a standstill in both directions. The exit ramps into Crossiron Mills are blocked due to excess traffic, which is also slowing down traffic along the QE2 in the area.

Freezing rain could cause travel havoc
Plan to take your time on area roads if you'll be travelling to see friends or family this holiday weekend.
A chance of freezing rain Saturday, followed by blowing snow and gusty winds is forecasted for most of Alberta and along the Saskatchewan border. There is a special weather statment in effect for Airdrie and surrounding areas.
Travel in these regions will likely become difficult as freezing rain will cause untreated surfaces to become slippery. Snow and blowing snow will reduce visibility into Sunday morning.

UPDATE: RCMP continue to advise of poor driving conditions
Since Fridays storm rolled through Alberta, driving conditions have been less than favorable.
RCMP continue to advise the public of poor road conditions along Highway 2 through central Alberta. Many snowplows and other snow removal equipment, such as graders, continue to work to keep Alberta’s highways clear and open to traffic.
QEII highway conditions continue to be treacherous
Hazardous road conditions are being reported on the QEII highway in both directions from Airdrie to Olds, with the RCMP reporting that there are many vehicles unable to pass due to reduced visibility and heavy snowfall.
Motorists are urged to consider postponing travel until conditions improve.

Travel on the QEII slick
A storm blew through parts of Alberta last night, causing some treacherous driving conditions especially on the QEII.
RCMP is warning the public of poor road conditions along Highway 2 between Red Deer and Airdrie. Black ice and changing conditions are affecting visibility and surface traction on the road.
Heading towards Calgary roads are mostly snow covered as well.
