Vacancies on rental properties at an all decade low

Those looking for places to rent in Saskatchewan are having a tough time finding any as vacancies on rental properties have reached an all decade low. Since the COVID pandemic, the availability of places to rent continues to decline. CEO of the Saskatchewan Landlord Association, Cameron Choquette, explains the reasons why it seems harder and harder to find a place to rent. 

Homestretch for WHS vehicle raffle ticket sales: support the cause, Ride for Paws

With the big draw date nearing soon, the Weyburn Humane Society is making a push for ticket sales for their vehicle raffle. Volunteers will have the 2024 GMC Terrain parked at the corner of Souris Avenue and Government Road this Friday, August 16th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where they'll be selling raffle tickets and mini-donuts.

Shelter Manager Colleen Morrice said the cost of the vehicle still hasn't been covered by what they've sold so far.

Your lost belongings could be waiting at the police station

When residents of Weyburn find items that appear to have been lost by others, they often will turn those items into the Weyburn Police Service in the hopes that they can be returned to the rightful owner. This includes things such as cell phones, wallets, keys, ID cards, and more. From there, the police will try to reunite those items with the owners.  

Building a new legacy: Eagles focus on fresh start

The 2023 football season will go down in the history books for Weyburn Comprehensive School. The team went undefeated in the regular season and playoffs on their way to their second 5A 12-man football provincial title in three years. They would dominate their opponents, with the closest any opponent getting was 17 points in a preseason game against Winnipeg’s Grant Park. The success also had the team ranked as the top small-school team in the entire country by Canadian Football Chat. 

Weyburn Police Commission appoints interim chief as Blunden resignation takes effect

The City of Weyburn announced this morning via press release they have accepted the resignation of Police Chief Jamie Blunden, effective immediately.  

It was learned earlier this week Blunden had accepted the position of Chief of Police in Estevan after the departure of their former chief, Richard Loewen, who left the Estevan Police Service to head up the Saskatchewan Marshall Service, was announced.

Smoke to creep back to the southeast, thickening this evening

Smoke is settling onto the southeast as winds are shifting and picking up smoke from wildfires raging to the north.

That cover is expected to hit special weather statement criteria today, potentially causing health issues for people outside.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Terri Lang says that a lot of the smoke is coming from our own province.

Local teacher gears up for new school year

As the summer is coming to an end, Audrey Rogers, a second and third-grade teacher at Assiniboia Park Elementary, is preparing for the new school year.

"I've been thinking about this since the beginning of August."

Rogers says a lot goes into preparing for the school year, and you can never be fully prepared.

 "If you're changing grades or moving rooms, it's like moving a whole house." She continues, "Something new always comes up. Teaching is about planning and being creative, and you have to adjust when the students arrive."

Canada must respond to mpox crisis in Africa to prevent spread here, experts say

The World Health Organization's declaration of mpox as a global public health emergency means Canada must do its part to help stem outbreaks of the virus in Africa, experts say. 

"Where there is a fire, we all put it out quickly and the whole village is safe. If you allow one house to burn in a village, sooner or later that fire is coming for you," said Dr. Madhukar Pai, Canada Research Chair in epidemiology and global health at McGill University in Montreal.

Weyburn athletes continue to make a mark at lacrosse nationals

The Minor Box Lacrosse Nationals continued in Regina yesterday, with mixed results from the teams from Saskatchewan across all age levels.  

The male U13 team would make it two wins in two days after they picked up a 6-1 win over Manitoba yesterday afternoon. Weyburn’s Cohen Baumgartner would get a goal in the game. 

Mayor Roy comments on outgoing Engineering Director

Today is the last day at City Hall for Jennifer Wilkinson in her role as the City of Weyburn's Engineering Director. She begins her retirement tomorrow.

During Monday's meeting of Weyburn City Council, Mayor Marcel Roy said, throughout her four and a half years, Wilkinson made a strong contribution to steady improvements within the City.
