Four Saskatchewan teams set for semi-final battles at box lacrosse nationals

The round-robin portion of the Minor Box Lacrosse Nationals in Regina wrapped up yesterday, and four teams from Saskatchewan are off to the medal round, which begins today.  

The male U13 team, which includes Weyburn’s Cohen Baumgartner, will be taking on BC in the semi-finals today. They closed out the round-robin yesterday afternoon against the First Nations Lacrosse Association, falling 8-2.

MLA Dustin Duncan addresses opposition to proposed wind energy project

The proposed wind energy project set to be built around Weyburn has been met with a lot of opposition. Weyburn Big Muddy MLA and minister responsible for SaskPower, Dustin Duncan says he’s not overly surprised. 

“I think that you often see that when these types of projects come to communities. And I certainly know that as the proponent Enbridge is aware of that as well, that's why they have had outreach with members of the community, with the landowners, with some of the neighboring landowners, acreage owners as well, and continue to do so.” 

Ukraine can use Canadian military equipment inside Russia, Ottawa says

The federal government says the Ukrainian army can use military equipment provided by Canada inside Russia.

A spokesperson for National Defence says Canada places no geographic restrictions on military equipment donated to Ukraine.

The statement comes after Ukraine launched a surprise military offensive into Russia earlier this month. 

The attack is unprecedented for its use of Ukrainian military units on Russian soil.

Ottawa has committed $4 billion in military assistance to Ukraine through 2029.

No swimming at Nickle Lake: Saskatchewan Health Authority

Due to high levels of toxic algae present in the water, the beach at Nickle Lake Regional Park has been closed until further notice as of Thursday afternoon.

According to a post on social media, the Saskatchewan Health Authority tested the water to determine the advisory, and will be testing the waters again next week.

In the post, the park management apologized for any inconvenience this may cause.

Hot, dry weather pushes Saskatchewan harvest forward: Weekly crop report

According to this week's crop report from the Saskatchewan ministry of Agriculture, hot temperatures and minimal rainfall have caused an early start to harvest due to the rapid crop development. 

Harvest is 11 percent complete, which is above the provincial average. Fall rye has the highest harvest progress with 64 percent in the bin. Behind rye is winter wheat at 18 percent. 

'Freedom Convoy' organizer Chris Barber's lawyers make final arguments

Defence lawyers making final arguments on behalf of one of the prominent "Freedom Convoy" organizers are maintaining their client's innocence, with proceedings scheduled to continue next week.

Diane Magas argued before a judge Thursday that her client, Chris Barber, never meant to gridlock Ottawa and that he is not responsible for the actions of convoy participants.

She also said there's an "enormous" amount of material to deal with in the trial and the process has taken more time than expected. The trial began in September 2023 and has faced a number of delays.

Biosecurity is an important part of any farming operation with ranchers having to take special care for their own farm systems.

That can include managing disease risks wherever they pop up, including from outside sources.
