Biologist offers safety tips about bears in SE Saskatchewan

It is the time of year when black bears have started to look for extra food ahead of hibernation. With fall just around the corner, bears are in a period called hypophagia, where they can eat upwards of 20,000 calories of food a day. As they look for extra nourishment, they are more visible, sometimes venturing from their more familiar locales in search of food.  

Canadian Olympians return home after record-setting Summer Games

The arrival terminals at airports in Toronto and Montreal were filled with cheers on Monday as fans and family gathered to give a hero’s welcome to Canadian Olympians returning home from the Paris Games with a record-breaking medal haul. 

The Summer Games saw Team Canada bring home an unprecedented number of medals — nine gold and 27 in total. Both were records for Canada at a non-boycotted Summer Olympics, surpassing previous highs set in Tokyo three years ago and 1992 in Barcelona.

Council highlights: election 2024, lights at First Avenue intersection

Weyburn City Council met in Council Chambers at 6 p.m. last night, when approvals were made for RFPs, and for a funding application process for the City's portion of 22nd Avenue through the Clearing the Path (CTP) corridor system.

Communications Coordinator Kyle Hertes provided Council with a guided tour of the Elections 2024 website and encouraged the officials to familiarize themselves with it so they can better advise the citizens who may have inquiries. Find the site HERE

'New normal': Jasper wildfire evacuees can start returning to townsite on Friday

The 5,000 residents of Jasper, Alta., chased out of their homes three weeks ago ahead of a devastating wildfire, can go home Friday.

Officials said essential services have been restored to the point where they can allow a blanket re-entry.

However, utility services could still be hit and miss. Some homes may look fine on the outside but will have sustained heavy smoke or water damage on the inside. Other homes may be fenced off as public safety hazards.

Big year ahead for Sawyer Leko's Lacrosse goals

Weyburn's Sawyer Leko has had the opportunity to travel throughout Canada and the U.S. playing a game he loves. 

Lacrosse has become a way of life for Leko, who is currently playing with the Junior B Tier 1 Regina Queen City Kings Box Lacrosse Team. They'll soon be heading to Hamilton to play in the Founders Cup, a national championship for Junior B lacrosse. The 16-year-old is also coaching the U15 Team Sask for minor box cross nationals.

He said he's been playing with the Queen City Kings for a couple of years, where he's made some of the best memories of his life.

National Beef Strategy sees great progress in latest status update

The Canadian beef industry is taking a look at what it's done and how it can move forward as a status update on its 2020-2024 National Beef Strategy.

The status update covers the last two years of the strategy, covering June 2022 through June 2024.

Bonk wins nomination for federal Conservatives in Souris-Moose Mountain

The Conservative Party of Canada has named their candidate for Souris-Moose Mountain for the next federal election. In a nomination vote held over the weekend, Steven Bonk, who is the Saskatchewan Party MLA for Moosomin, was named as the next candidate for the riding, beating out Torquay Mayor Michael Strachan.  

Registration now open for BBBS Weyburn after-school program

An after-school program is launching this fall by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn. Registration opened on August 8th for the program starting on the first day of school.  

Director of development and communications for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn, Amy Mohr says thirty spots are available for the pilot year. 

“Registration will be open until we are full. We will have a waitlist though, so if you're interested, I would certainly recommend just submitting that registration form or the inquiry form and being added to the waitlist just in case.”
