Estevan names Weyburn’s Jamie Blunden as its next police chief

At the latest Estevan Board of Police Commissioners meeting, it was announced that Jamie Blunden, the current police chief in Weyburn, will take over as chief of the Estevan Police Service starting in October.

Current Chief Rich Lowen’s last day with the Estevan Police Service is August 31. Deputy Chief Warren Morrical will serve as interim chief until Blunden’s arrival. There is no word as to when Blunden's last day in Weyburn will be at this time. 

Weyburn economic development: Fostering a thriving downtown

Two businesses in Weyburn's downtown area announced their closing on the weekend. Monica Osborn, executive director with Weyburn Regional Economic Development, says it's unfortunate to see them go, but where one door closes another one opens. 

“The individuals that had owned those businesses are community leaders that were very impactful and I would hope that other businesses or people that were wanting to start their own businesses have been inspired by those individuals to be able to open up their own ideas and bring forward new businesses to Weyburn.”

Two prominent "Freedom Convoy" organizers "crossed the line" into criminal activity when they led a massive demonstration to Ottawa in 2022 and refused to leave, the Crown said in its final submissions on their criminal trial Tuesday.

Tamara Lich and Chris Barber were among several organizers who brought a huge number of demonstrators and big-rig trucks to Ottawa two years ago to protest pandemic-era public health restrictions and vaccine mandates.

Weyburn braces for possible severe storms

Weyburn may see the risk of some severe weather this afternoon.

According to the thunderstorm outlook from Environment Canada, a disturbance in the upper atmosphere is moving into the area. Moisture coming from the southeast combined with warm surface temperatures creates fuel for possible storms. 

Strong winds near the ground can create spinning in the atmosphere and potentially lead to the formation of supercells which are capable of producing large hail and damaging winds. 

APAS looking for young farmers to get interested in policy through Young Leaders porgram

The Agricultural Producers Association of Saskatchewan (APAS) is getting ready to open up its ranks for the Young Leaders program again this year.

In that program, they invite anyone between the ages of 18-40 to look at the policy side of agriculture and what APAS does.

Arms and ambition: Weyburn hosts arm wrestling competition

Weyburn is set to experience the thrill of arm wrestling for the first time.

Arm Wars, an event hosted by Michael Gass and backed by the Saskatchewan Arm Wrestling Association, unites athletes and onlookers for a weekend competition that Weyburn hasn't experienced in quite some time.

"It's not our tournament; it's also Weyburns first arm wrestling competition in over two decades," shared Gass. "Hosting this event and witnessing our community come together is incredibly thrilling."
