Storm drain damage prompts unexpected repairs to Signal Hill Trail

Anyone who regularly enjoys Weyburn’s Tatagwa Trails System may have noticed some extra repaving done on a portion by City Garden Road on the Signal Hill Trail. Paige Tenbult, communications coordinator for the City of Weyburn, explains this was not part of the annual repaving work done on the trails system.

“Every year in our infrastructure revitalization program (IRP), we have allocated money for the Tatagwa Parkway Trail system. This year, Riverwood Trail and Signal Hill Trail will see some upgrades to their pavement.”

No charges laid after separate driving disputes turn physical

Two physical altercations last week required mediation by the Weyburn Police Service, both related to driving behaviour.

The first incident happened on Friday, when WPS members were called outside of a business on Sims Avenue. Sergeant Riley Ross says they determined there were two involved parties, drivers who had exited their vehicles to engage in an altercation.

“It was more so a road rage incident where they had stopped on Sims Avenue and exited their vehicles, and that's when the confrontation occurred.”

The Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs says it's time for Ottawa to stop studying the idea of a national forest fire co-ordination agency and take action.

The organization's president wants the federal government to take inspiration from the U.S. Fire Administration to establish a similar office in Canada.

The U.S. office is part of Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, but Ken McMullen says a Canadian version could be simpler and less costly.

Alberta man charged in Weyburn assault

The Weyburn Police Service was called to a local hotel after reports of an assault. Sergeant Riley Ross says the incident occurred between a customer and his taxi driver.

“Upon arrival, it was determined that an individual who was a customer for a taxicab company was getting dropped off at the hotel. Upon exiting the vehicle, he assaulted the taxicab driver, which resulted in charges under the criminal code for assault being laid against that individual.”

Plenty of ways to support the Weyburn Humane Society

The Weyburn Humane Society is rallying to move some future-pets from the shelter into local homes, as well as for their annual vehicle raffle fundraiser.

Currently, they have a special for the month of August, a $50 adoption fee.

"Hopefully that does help move some of the cats and dogs because there are some that have been there for a while, so and it's not a great life to be stuck in a kennel," shared Board Chair Bev Paul.

She said some of the cats have been with them for quite some time.
