Marc Garneau, Canada's first person in space, dies at 76

Marc Garneau, the first Canadian in space who went on to become a high-profile federal politician, has died at 76 years old.

MPs rose for a moment of silence in the House of Commons tonight at the request of government whip Mark Gerretsen.

Garneau was a pioneer in Canada's space program.

He later entered politics, serving as a Liberal member of Parliament for a Montreal-area riding between 2008 and 2023. 

He held many cabinet positions in Justin Trudeau's government, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Transport.

Weyburn-Bengough MLA comments on local response to northern fires

As wildfires continue to rage across northern Saskatchewan, thousands have been forced from their homes. More than 9,000 residents have been evacuated, with a number of them arriving in the southeast, including right here in Weyburn.

Weyburn-Bengough MLA Mike Weger spoke with Discover Weyburn this morning about the response to the crisis and the important role local residents and businesses are playing.

Residential road closures in effect this week

The City of Weyburn is advising residents of road closures scheduled for this week, due to city crews replacing valves and hydrants.  

The closures will affect the blocks between Government Road and Third Street southeast. Today will see the closure of Fourth Avenue in this area, followed by Third Avenue tomorrow, and Second Avenue on Friday. 

Residences in the area will be notified of any water service restrictions. Drivers in the area are asked to avoid this area whenever possible as it will be open to local traffic only. 

 

Thackery family host third annual Pancakes for STARS fundraiser

The Thackery family from Town of Goodwater is hosting the third annual Pancakes for STARS fundraiser. Sheila Thackery explains they are serving a by-donation pancake breakfast with all proceeds donated to STARS. 

“If you want to put in 10 bucks, 50 bucks, whatever you put in the pot, that all 100% goes back to STARS and we make the donation on behalf of our community.  “ 

Carney says Canada will take 'some time' to respond to doubled U.S. metal tariffs

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada will take "some time" on its response to increased U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum.

Tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum to the United States increased to 50 per cent on Wednesday after President Donald Trump followed through on his vow to double the duties.

On his way into the weekly Liberal caucus meeting in Ottawa today, Carney said Canada is in "intensive" discussions with the U.S. on trade.

Outlaw Buckers & Oil Kings crown the 2025 Champion

The Second Annual Outlaw Buckers & Oil Kings Match Bronc Riding event was held on Tuesday evening here in Weyburn, touted by organizers as a Stampede experience. 

The top 30 ranked riders in the world standings were welcomed to compete, including four-time world champion Zeke Thurston, as well as multiple NFR qualifiers and multiple Canadian champions. Each was matched with bucking horses from the Outlaw Buckers, the C5, and the Calgary Stampede Rodeo.

Bank of Canada holds key rate at 2.75% as tariff uncertainty persists

The Bank of Canada held its benchmark interest rate steady at 2.75 per cent Wednesday as policymakers keep waiting for more clarity on how tariffs will impact the economy.

“Uncertainty remains high,” Bank of Canada governor Tiff Macklem said in prepared remarks after the release of the rate decision.

“At this decision, there was a clear consensus to hold policy unchanged as we gain more information.”

Economists and financial markets widely expected the second consecutive hold.

Weyburn, other communities welcome wildfire evacuees

As wildfires continue to force evacuations in northern Saskatchewan, the City of Weyburn has become a temporary refuge for approximately 80 evacuees from the Creighton and Flin Flon areas. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency is overseeing the emergency response, while Weyburn’s Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) is supporting local efforts to accommodate and care for those displaced.
