Long days ahead: Local farmer comments on upcoming harvest season

While summer is not over yet, a new season is beginning as local farmers prepare for the harvest. However, efforts may be delayed due to the cooler and wetter growing season. 

Dale Paslawski, who farms north of Weyburn, says crops are advancing well, but slightly behind in development. He has already begun swathing yellow peas but had to take a break due to the forecasted showers.  

Structure fire false alarm prompts safety reminder: WPS

In the afternoon of July 28th, the Weyburn Police Service were called to the scene of a possible structure fire alongside the Weyburn Fire Department. Upon arrival, they did see smoke coming from the residence, however, Sergeant Riley Ross explains it was not a structure fire. 

“It was determined that it wasn't a structure fire and that it was located in a garbage can in the residence, and a cigarette was inside the garbage can that started smoke within the house.” 

Palmero, Caleb Jerann

Caleb Jerann Palmero, late of Ogema, SK, passed away on July 31, 2025 at the age of 9 years.

He was predeceased by Myrnalee Palmero, Josephine Robles, Cresencio and Filomena Agala.

Caleb is survived by his mom and dad, Jerbert Palmero and DeAnn Shaver; sister, Celeste Jerianna Palmero; grandparents, Zosimo Palmero, Juanito and Elizabeth Distor; aunts and uncles: Marilou Palmero, Jerwin and Liezel Palmero, Jershon and Jonnahly Palmero, Nicolette Jayle Distor; cousins: Jelou Kyrle, Ashraff Yaseen, Jazzelle Bless, Alex Emmanuel and Christopher Oliver.

RCMP reports fatalities, injuries rising: Tips from SGI on rural road safety

Recent data shows a rise over the past decade in collisions resulting in serious injury.  

The RCMP responded to 77 fatal collisions in 2024, which resulted in 88 deaths, as well as 271 collisions involving serious injuries reported. This is the highest total in six years, and is up 43 per cent from 2023, when 321 people were seriously injured, also up 48 per cent from the previous year.

Roundabout construction well underway, slated for on-time completion

Work continues at the intersection of Highways 39 and 13 as a roundabout is being constructed in the high-traffic corridor. This is part of a $29 million project that includes the twinning of nearly six kilometres of Highway 39 northwest of Weyburn.  

Director of Communications at the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways, David Horth, says the project is making good progress and scheduled to be completed on time 

Trio of unrelated thefts under investigation by Weyburn Police

The Weyburn Police Service (WPS) responded to three theft incidents last week, ranging from welding cables to a homebuilt trailer.  

According to a release issued by the WPS, the first theft occurred last Wednesday, when they received a complaint of a stolen trailer. The trailer was parked on Hill Avenue overnight and was stolen sometime during the night. It’s described as distinct, homebuilt and made from the box of a two-tone, blue 1967 Mercury truck. The incident is still under investigation.  

WHS host $50 adoption month as shelter hits capacity

The Weyburn Humane Society (WHS) is making it easier to adopt a new furry companion, while also easing the burden on the shelter, with August adoption month. The adoption fee for all cats and dogs in their care will be only $50 for the entire month of August. 

Shelter manager for the WHS Colleen Morrice says they see a notable decrease in adoptions, especially cat adoptions in the summer. She attributes this to the upcoming winter season. 

Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation Powwow brings big energy and bigger crowds to Kisbey area

The sound of drums, the swirl of regalia, and the sense of community all came together over the weekend just outside of Kisbey, as Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation hosted its annual competition powwow at the 7 Lakota grounds.

The gathering welcomed hundreds of dancers and visitors from across Canada and the United States, turning the quiet grounds into a celebration of culture, language, and unity.

“This was our biggest turnout yet,” said event organizer Kathleen McArthur. “We had almost 200 dancers in the grand entry alone, and it stretched across three full songs.”

Weyburn's Schenher shines at U18 Women's National Football Championship

Most teenage girls would spend their summer months hanging out with friends, socializing or maybe playing one sport or a hobby. Very few would be spending their time travelling all over Canada playing a variety of sports; however, Weyburn’s Ella Schenher is far from ordinary. Schenher wrapped up the end of July in Calgary for her third and final year of U18 Women’s National Football Championship, quarterbacking the Saskatchewan team.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announces support measures for softwood lumber industry

The federal government is setting up a safety net of loans, product-development grants and market diversification plans for Canada’s softwood lumber industry in an effort to shield it from the worst of American duties and fees.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the plan Tuesday, promising $700 million in loan guarantees to address what he called "immediate pressures" and $500 million for long-term supports to help companies diversify export markets and develop their products. 

Carney also promised that future projects will "prioritize" Canadian lumber.
