Create a snapshot of Weyburn biodiversity: Nature Conservancy of Canada hosts annual Backyard BioBlitz

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is holding its fourth annual Backyard BioBlitz on August 1st to 5th. Participants from all over the country will be snapping photos to be used by biologists to track information about plants and animals in different areas.

CPKC is reporting strong grain movement as we approach the end of the 2023-2024 crop year

There's been a definite increase in grain moving to market as farmers look to clear out bin space for the new harvest.

Elizabeth Hucker, the assistant vice-president of sales and marketing for bulk with CPKC says in grain shipping week #51 they moved just shy of 400,000 metric tonnes to Vancouver, Thunder Bay, Eastern Canada, the United States and to Mexico all out of Western Canada. 

She notes back to around week #49 they were shipping around that 400,000 metric tonne level, adding that movement is stronger than what we would normally see this time of  the year.

Adoption special at the Weyburn Humane Society's animal shelter for those needing 'furever homes'

With the kids still off from school for another month, there's no better time than now for families to bond with a new pet, and beginning today, spayed or neutered cats and dogs can be adopted from the Weyburn Humane Society's animal shelter for $50. 

Shelter Manager Colleen Morrice said the shelter is currently at capacity, and while spayed and neutered cats are always available at this rate, there are about 14 medium to large sized dogs who qualify for this special rate.

Sedley community rallies for Early Learning Center with successful fundraiser

The Prairie Playhouse Early Learning Center, an eagerly anticipated addition to Sedley, received a significant boost over the weekend, thanks to a successful car show and summer bash. 

According to Kelsey Morrison, the board chair for the center, the event raised just under $10,000.

"We did our final count, and we fundraised a little under $10,000." Morrison continues, "Our goal was to fundraise $10,000 at this event, and knowing that the community showed up—not just from Sedley but also from Weyburn, Regina, and other rural areas—was incredibly heartening."

Pea harvest starting to get underway in Saskatchewan


Despite a late start to seeding, harvest operations are starting to get underway in the Prairies.

Precipitation which delayed seeding activity this spring was welcome in some of the drier areas, while some areas of Manitoba were impacted by too much rain.

The extreme heat with highs into the 30s is now impacting crop potential in some areas of Alberta and Saskatchewan reducing yield and quality expectations.

It is with great sadness that the family of Judith Ann Hoimyr (nee: Mackintosh) announce her passing on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at the age 70 years, after a courageous battle with cancer.  Judy’s journey touched the lives of many, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of strength and resilience. Her courage was an inspiration to all who knew her.
