Red Wings-Bruins rivalry heats up in preseason finale

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings went into Estevan Saturday night looking to close out the 2024 preseason with a perfect record of 5-0. Despite outshooting the Bruins 36-33, Estevan was able to eke out a 3-2 win in overtime over the Red Wings. 

Estevan took the lead in the first period when Rory Elson scored an unassisted goal just 4:05 into the game. Then, 3:28 into the second, Reed Gramlich would beat Dazza Mitchell to make it a 2-0 lead for the Bruins. 

Zol stands tall as Red Wings shut down Bruins

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings came out firing on all cylinders last night as they entertained the Estevan Bruins in preseason action. Keenan Ingram would tally twice, and Angelo Zol was nearly flawless in net as the Red Wings topped the Bruins 4-1. 

"At the end of the day, it is a rivalry, preseason or not," said head coach Cody Mapes after the game. "It was great. Good to always win, but, you know, proud of our guys for standing up for each other."

The annual meeting for the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings was held at the Ramada in Weyburn Wednesday night. 

Those in attendance heard about how the past season went for the Red Wings, on and off the ice. The team had a short, but memorable playoff run, going to seven games against the Humboldt Broncos in one of the most entertaining matchups of the postseason last year.  

SJHL schedule released: Red Wings begin quest for championship in Yorkton

The SJHL made a little noise on Canada Day, as they released their 2024-25 schedule.  

The season will start on September 20th, with 10 of the league’s 12 teams, including the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings, taking to the ice. The Red Wings will be opening their season in Yorkton against the Terriers. This will be the seventh time in the past 10 years the Red Wings have opened their season with a game against the Terriers.

The SJHL Draft was held Tuesday afternoon, and the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings made 10 selections during the draft. The team did not have a first-round selection in the 09 Draft, with the Melville Millionaires holding that pick. The Red Wings did get to make the first selection of the second round, however, and went with 09-born defenceman Ethan Young, who played last season with the Regina Pat Blues U15 AA squad.  

Weyburn's off-season blitz: Trades, hires, and high hopes

The trade window for junior A hockey in Canada opened on Saturday, and by the end of the day, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings had announced a roster move. They acquired 05-born forward Ty McKay from the Humboldt Broncos in exchange for a player development fee and a second-round draft pick in the 2025 draft.

Last Tuesday, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings came away from game seven of their best-of-seven quarterfinal series with the Humboldt Broncos on the wrong side of the scoreboard. After dominating the Broncos for the first two periods of the game, Weyburn would find themselves down 2-0 after a pair of quick goals, and Humboldt held on to win the game 3-0, and the series 4-3.  

Red Wings ousted by Humboldt in decisive game 7

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings came into Tuesday night’s game seven against the Humboldt Broncos looking to do something neither team had done in the series – win on the road. Both teams had their backs to the wall, hoping to extend their season. While the Red Wings carried the play for most of the game, the Broncos took advantage of the power play early in the third period, and held on for a 2-0 win, taking the series 4-3.
