Fluky goal seals victory as Broncos best Red Wings in Game 5

The home team once again got the win in the opening round series between the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings and the Humboldt Broncos. Humboldt skated away with a 4-1 victory to take a 3-2 edge in the best-of-seven series, which will now shift back to Weyburn for game six Sunday night. 

Humboldt opened the scoring just 100 seconds into the game and kept the Red Wings from being able to gain any momentum.

Those were the thoughts of Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings netminder Dazza Mitchell Wednesday night as he made 25 saves en route to a 4-3 overtime win over the Humboldt Broncos. The win tied up the best-of-seven quarterfinal series between the two clubs at 2-2 as the series shifts back to Humboldt for game five Friday night. 

Ruthven's goal lifts Red Wings past Broncos

Jaxson Ruthven scored the game-winner, and Dazza Mitchell made 34 saves as the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings picked up a 5-3 win over the Humboldt Broncos in front of a loud and boisterous crowd at Crescent Point Place Tuesday night. With the win, the best-of-seven series is now 2-1 in favour of the Broncos, but the Red Wings will look to even the series up on Wednesday in game four. 

The win was also the first home playoff victory for the Red Wings since the 2018 playoffs, and the first on home ice in the quarterfinals since 2016. 

Red Wings' rally falls short in game 2 loss to Broncos

Liam Fitzgerald and Matthew Hodson scored twice, but it wouldn't be enough as the Humboldt Broncos outlasted the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings Saturday, winning game two of their best-of-seven series 7-4. With the win, the Broncos now lead the series 2-0 as it comes to Weyburn for games three and four this coming week. 

Weyburn Red Wings fall to Humboldt Broncos in SJHL playoff series opener

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings went into the Elgar Petersen Arena to open the 2024 SJHL playoffs against the Humboldt Broncos. The first-round series is the first meeting between the two clubs in the playoffs since 2015. 

The Broncos, who came into the post-season as the number three seed in the SJHL, would come out looking to set a tone for the series by scoring early and often. They would open up the game with a goal nearly six minutes into the game and then hold on to the lead to take the first game of the series. Humboldt took the first game by a final of 6-1.

Red Wings off to Humboldt

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings left Weyburn around 11:00 a.m. this morning, heading to Humboldt for Game 1 of their opening round best-of-seven playoff series with the Broncos. The team had fans coming out to Crescent Point Place, with an escort from the Weyburn Police Service. The route out of town also had fans coming out to cheer the team on.

For the first time since 2015, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings will be taking on the Humboldt Broncos in the post-season. That year, the Red Wings came out on top, winning the best-of-five wild card series in four games against the higher-seeded team. This year, they will look to emulate the success from nine seasons ago when they open up play at the Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt tonight.
