Red Wings wrap up spring camp

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings held their spring camp this past weekend. Players from across the province, and a few from outside of the province as well, took part in the event.  

The players were split across six teams, two of which were for younger players. They took part in a number of events, including seminars on training and mental health, as well as scrimmages through the weekend.  

Red Wings put Notre Dame in doghouse

Ty Mason scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes to play in Wednesday night’s game in Notre Dame, as the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings skated to their second win in a row, beating the Hounds 4-2. The two points for the Red Wings also had playoff implications for the Hounds, who are now all be ensured to finish in eighth place and will open the postseason in a best of seven match-up with the Estevan Bruins. 

Red Wings hold awards banquet

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings held their awards banquet Sunday night at the Weyburn Legion. 

Rookie forward Kirk Mullen would find himself with a lot of the hardware, as he was named the Top Forward, Rookie of the Year and the team’s Most Valuable Player. He is also the top scorer on the team. 

Chorney scores 4 in OT thriller against Estevan

“Last time I had a hat trick was in AAA Midget, and yah, it’s really unbelievable I was able to put four away tonight.” 

Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings forward Davis Chorney led the way for the hometown team Saturday, as he scored all four goals, including the overtime winner, as the Red Wings picked up a 4-3 win over the Estevan Bruins. 

Red Wings come up short at home

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings found themselves down early in their game Tuesday night against the visiting Yorkton Terriers, and despite their best efforts, were unable to overcome the deficit, falling 4-1 at Crescent Point Place.

“Ten minutes off,” said Red Wings head coach Cody Mapes after the game. “We’re young and we’re not good enough right now to take 10 minutes off. The other 50 minutes of the game we were okay but we gave up about 15 shots and three goals in that 10 minutes and that is, unfortunately, the difference in the game.”

Red Wings come up short in North Battleford

“We’ve got to make sure we play five-on-five,” said Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings head coach Cody Mapes after Wednesday night’s 4-1 loss to the Battlefords North Stars. “We’re pretty good when we do that, we just got to make sure we don’t give teams like this chances when they’re going to get chances on their own.”

The loss closed out a two-game, two-night trip to North Battleford where the Red Wings kept pace throughout the night against the North Stars. The games just came down to small mistakes, miscues and bounces.
