Knights of the SJHL Roundtable - 2021 Holiday Edition

This week, Steven WIlson (Weyburn Red Wings) is joined by Rory McGouran (Humboldt Broncos), Matt Dekker (Yorkton Terriers) and Nick Nielsen (Kindersley Klippers).

The panel talks about how the first half of the season played out compared to what they were expecting at the start of the season, who is on Santa's naughty list and who is on Santa's nice list, and a whole lot more.

Red Wings Shut Out At Home

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings played their last game before the Christmas Break Saturday night, and it is a game they will likely want to forget. After finishing the first period trailing 1-0, a pair of shorthanded goals in the final moments of the second helped boost the Estevan Bruins to a 7-0 victory, securing the Highway 39 Cup.

The loss didn’t sit well with Red Wings head coach Cody Mapes – in particular the effort from his team at times.

Red Wings Come Up Short

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings were looking to bounce back from Wednesday’s loss when they took the ice at Crescent Point Place Friday night. It was the team's first game at home since November 29th. The visiting Melville Millionaires has other ideas, though, capitalizing on their opportunities to beat the Red Wings 4-1.

Red Wings Silence Raucous Crowd in Flin Flon

Turning aside 42 of the 44 shots he faced at the Whitney Forum, Boston Gelowitz recorded his first-ever win in the SJHL Saturday, backstopping the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings to a 5-2 victory over the Flin Flon Bombers.

“Boston Gelowitz was great again tonight,” said Red Wings head coach Cody Mapes after the game. “It’s not an easy rink to come into and try to get your first SJHL win, and I couldn’t be happier for him and the guys.”

He was supported by offence from all quarters, with Beau Larson, Nick Dobson, Austyn Hansen and Troy Hamilton.

Last Second Goal Stymies Red Wings In Melfort

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings found themselves down early in the second period Wednesday night against the Melfort Mustangs. The team would rally back, thanks to stellar play in net by Boston Gelowitz. The comeback, however, would come up just short, as the Mustangs would find a way to score with just seven seconds left in the game, winning 4-3.

“In the end, we gave ourselves a chance to win,” said head coach Cody Mapes after the game. “We probably didn’t start the way that we would have liked; in the second half of the game there was a lot of good things.”

Five Red Wings Suspended

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings will be shorthanded on their three-game road trip that starts Wednesday night in Melfort.

Late Tuesday, the SJHL announced five players from the team had been suspended for violating the league's social media policy. The league did not specify how the players violated the policy, or when the violation took place.

Davis Chorney was given a five-game suspension, while Jackson Fellner, Nicolas Kovacs, Sam Skillestad, and Nik Sombrowski were suspended three games each.
