VIDEO: Hamilton Tallies Twice But Wings Come Up Short

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings held the lead over the Melville Millionaires for the majority of the game Friday night, but a pair of third period goals would swing the momentum back to the Millionaires. Melville held on to skate to a 4-3 win over the Wings. 

Melville had initially jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game. Noah Wills scored 1:39 into the first period, and it was followed up with a goal by Zach Cain at the 1:54 mark.  

Fans Skate With Red Wings

After capping off their second win in as many nights, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings invited fans in attendance to join them on the ice for a skate. Dozens of kids of all ages took part in the skate, getting autographs, playing tag, and getting to know the players.  

“It’s nice giving to the kids, skating with them,” said Red Wing forward Nik Sombrowski during the skate. “Obviously they look up to us, so getting out here with them makes our day, and it’s a great time.” 

Wings Snap Skid With Win On Home Ice

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings snapped a five-game losing streak Friday night, as they topped the Melfort Mustangs 3-2 in a shootout. The game would see goaltender Jackson Fellner stop 25 of the 27 shots he faced through regulation, and then also stop all three shooters in the shootout to secure the victory. 

“We contained when we had to in the second period, and got a couple real good kills,” said head coach Cody Mapes after the game.  

Red Wings Acquire Hamilton From Wayway

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings announced Friday afternoon they had acquired forward Troy Hamilton from the Waywayseecappo Wolverines of the MJHL.

Hamilton is a familiar name in southeast Saskatchewan. He started his Junior A career with the Estevan Bruins as an 18-year-old. In his rookie season, he compiled 29 points in 41 games. He was then traded to Valley Wildcats of the MJAHL last season, where he skated in six games.

Kuzma Named Forward of the Week

After putting up four goals, including a hat trick this past Friday, Drew Kuzma of the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings has been named the SJHL's Forward of the Week.

In the three games on the road, Kuzma notched five points, with four goals and an assist. So far this season the forward has picked up 15 points in 20 games.

Red Wings Close Trip With Barnburner

It was a barnburner of a game between the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings and the La Ronge Ice Wolves Friday night to close out the northern road swing for the Wings. The Red Wings, though, would find themselves coming up just short, falling 6-5 to the Ice Wolves. 

The Red Wings continued their strong play on the power play, with the man advantage counting for three of their five goals. Drew Kuzma also had a coming-out party at the Mel Hegland Uniplex in La Ronge, scoring a hat trick. 

Red Wings Rally, But Can't Complete Comeback

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings found themselves down early against the La Ronge Ice Wolves Thursday night. Despite everything they threw at netminder Xavier Cannon, though, they weren’t able to finish a comeback, falling 6-3.  

“I thought the effort was there,” said assistant coach Nathan Deck after the game. “We came out hard, had a good start. The first period we had three kind of big mistakes that cost us, and they scored a couple of power play goals.”
