Update: Portion of Highway 15 closed after collision

Four people have been taken to hospital after a collision on Highway 15 on Sunday (Nov. 27) afternoon. 

Police say that, at about 1:30 p.m., a Hyundai Sonata sedan was travelling westbound on Highway 15 through an intersection with a flashing yellow light. The Sonata was struck by a Hyundai Santa Fe SUV turning left onto 17 Street northbound. 

EMS and STARS responded and transported the occupants of the Sonata, an adult man, adult woman, and male youth, to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. 

First Santa Claus Parade since pandemic met with warm weather and bright smiles

On Saturday (Nov. 26), the Fort Saskatchewan and District Chamber of Commerce held its annual Santa Claus Parade.

Dozens of floats from various businesses and locals drove through downtown handing out candy to the thousands of kids along the way.

As the float's rode down the streets, elves collected letters to Santa before the appearance of Father Christmas himself.

Canada ends scoring drought at men's World Cup but can't hold off Croatia

Canada wasted little time Sunday ending its scoring drought at the men's World Cup via Alphonso Davies but could not hold off Croatia, losing 4-1 to end its hopes of reaching the tournament's knockout round.

Ranked 12th in the world and runner-up to France four years ago in Russia, Croatia is filled with talent from top clubs and its class showed in rallying from an early 1-0 deficit.

Two goals by Andrej Kramaric and one by Marko Livaja accounted for the Croatian comeback. Lovro Majer added a stoppage-time goal in the 94th minute on a two-on-none attack. 

1M units of imported kids' pain meds now hitting pharmacy shelves as flu rates spike

Federal Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos says the previously announced one million units of imported kids' pain relievers are starting to arrive on pharmacy shelves, while an additional 500,000 units have been ordered and are expected over the next few weeks.

A separate shipment of kids' pain relievers from Australia are headed for hospitals and domestic production has ramped up, Duclos said at a news conference Friday morning. 

Trudeau says he's 'absolutely serene' about invoking Emergencies Act

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau defended his decision to invoke the Emergencies Act to a public inquiry Friday, displaying moments of introspection while acknowledging the seriousness of declaring a public order emergency and insisting it was the right thing to do for Canada.

The prime minister was the final witness at the Public Order Emergency Commission, which has spent six weeks examining Trudeau's emergency declaration in February in response to “Freedom Convoy” protests in Ottawa and elsewhere. 

Crews battle house fire in Sherwood Park

Members from all three Sherwood Park fire departments were called to a residential fire on Friday (Nov. 25) night. 

According to a post from Strathcona County Firefighters/Paramedics on Facebook, crews arrived at a home in the Meadowview area to find heavy smoke and flames.

Work to limit the spread of the fire to surrounding neighbourhood homes was immediately taken. 

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. 

No injuries were reported.

Fort Saskatchewan 'Lights Up' to welcome in the holidays

It was a Friday (Nov. 25) night to remember in Fort Saskatchewan. 

Hundreds gathered downtown at city hall to take part in the annual Lights Up! celebration. 

Joining residents was a whole cast of characters. The most popular guests were Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, who had a lineup of eager kids waiting to tell them what they wanted for Christmas. 

Samantha Meuse was one of those lucky kids. 

"I want a book called 'BFG' and a doll kitchen," said Meuse with a smile from ear to ear. "[My favourite part of Christmas is] that I get to open presents." 

Morinville Fire Department holds ceremony for new fire truck

Families, firefighters, and even the mayor attended a push-in ceremony to celebrate the arrival of the Morinville Fire Department's new fire truck.

On Friday (Nov. 25), the new engine stopped outside Morinville Town Hall to pick up Mayor Simon Boersma and Chief Administrative Officer Naleen Narayan before driving them to the ceremony.

As the engine pulled into the Don Found Fire Hall, spectators were waiting to get a look at their new engine.

Brad Boddez, fire chief with the town of Morinville, said that this new fire truck is replacing an older one.

Taking Canada's beef goals and message to the world

The Canadian cattle sector was represented during the recent climate-focused COP27 meetings.

This year, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change also placed a key focus and emphasis on agriculture and food systems.

CCA’s Bob Lowe and Mitchell Zoratti participated in COP27 as official observers and as part of Canada’s official delegation and were on the ground to participate in the many discussions.
