CGC makes changes to grain grading dispute process

The Canadian Grain Commission has made some key changes to the grain grading dispute process effective October 1st.

Farmers that disagree with a licensed primary elevator’s assessment of grain, have the right to ask the CGC for a "Final Quality Determination" (previously known as  "Subject to Inspector’s Grade and Dockage").

That request can relate to the official grade or any individual grading factor, including moisture, protein, and/or dockage.

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP charge teen in bocce ball vandalism

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP has arrested and charged a teenage boy for a string of vandalism to downtown vehicles and businesses involving bocce balls. 

Over the past week, police have received several reports of smashed car windows and one report of a business being vandalized. In each case, a bocce ball was left behind. 

After investigation, one teenage boy was identified and charged with mischief to vehicles. The suspect has since been released to his guardian. 

RCMP is still looking for other suspects involved. 

Local artists paint mural in downtown Fort Saskatchewan

A pair of Edmonton brothers are bringing some colour to downtown Fort Saskatchewan. 

Earlier this month, work began on a large mural painted on the side of Twice but Nice, a thrift store on 102 Street. The project was created by Flying Colors Murals, a painting company by the Thomas brothers, Dave and Allan.

The brothers got in touch with The City of Fort Saskatchewan after the city had a call out to artists in August. After sending the city their portfolio and references, they were shortlisted.

CN releases 2022-23 Winter Plan

CN's Winter Plan sets out a wide range of initiatives to ensure CN has the capacity and resources to meet customer needs.

CEO Tracy Robinson has been focusing the CN team on servicing customer needs by getting back to basics.

The 2022-23 Winter Plan released last week is built on four cornerstones: operating safely, delivering the best possible service, increasing network productivity and improving resiliency.

Some of new initiatives outlined in the Winter Plan to help improve delivery include:

It's as if they were using a telescope not just to peer into space, but also into time. 

Canadian scientists are already using spectacular data and images from the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope to look backward into some of the oldest stars ever studied and forward into how new stars and planets are born. 

U.K. man sentenced to life in prison for murder of Canadian teenager

A British man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a Canadian teenager who moved to England last year after meeting him online. 

Essex Police said Monday that Jack Sepple will spend a minimum 23 1/2 years in prison for the death of Ashley Wadsworth of Vernon, B.C.

Wadsworth, 19, was stabbed and strangled during a sustained attack in the 23-year-old's home on Feb. 1, police said. 

Sepple pleaded guilty to Wadsworth's murder last month.

Trudeau condemns deadly Russian strikes on Kyiv, Ukrainian cities

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned Russia's latest attacks on Ukraine as the country unleashed a lethal barrage of strikes against multiple Ukrainian cities on Monday, including downtown Kyiv where at least six people were killed. 

While speaking on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, Trudeau deplored the attacks and reiterated Canada's support for Ukraine.

Update: Person in BMW, RCMP officer get into gunfight in Strathcona County

A suspect linked to Monday (Oct. 10) morning's gunfight near Ardrossan is dead. 

At around 3 a.m., a Strathcona County RCMP officer located a stolen white BMW while conducting patrols on Highway 16 and Highway 824.

According to police, an occupant was told to get out of the car, when they pulled out a gun and shot at the officer.

A brief firefight broke out between the officer and the armed occupant before the shooter fled with the stolen car.

Highway 15 bridge fully opens

After over three years of construction, the new Highway 15 bridge is now open for two lane traffic going in and out of Fort Saskatchewan. 

The bridge partially opened in mid-September, allowing one-way traffic going both ways.

Construction began in August 2019 as part of the provincial government's $789.4-million investment into roads and bridges around Alberta.

Eight kilometers of Highway 15 is being twinned alongside the new bridge crossing. 

Sturgeon County kicks of Fire Prevention Week

Sturgeon County is making sure residents are prepared for fires this week. 

The county kicked off its annual Fire Prevention Week on Sunday (Oct. 9) with this year's theme being "Fire won't wait. Plan your escape." 

They have partnered with the National Fire Protection Association to help inform people about the actions they can take to keep themselves and their families safe from house fires.

Pat Mahoney, manager of protective services in Sturgeon, stressed that making the right decision quickly can save lives.
