Local artist Chelsea Tobias enters horror makeup competition

With October just around the corner, people are already getting into the Halloween spirit.

Local artist Chelsea Tobias is showing her excitement by entering the Face of Horror Halloween makeup competition.

Born in Fort Saskatchewan and growing up in the Bruderheim-Chipman area, Tobias' appreciation for horror makeup started after watching Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street series.

"I would always try to recreate the burns of [Freddy Krueger's] face," she said.

Saskatchewan Appeal Court removes injunction, allows Broncos lawsuit to proceed

The Saskatchewan Court of Appeal has set aside a temporary injunction that halted a lawsuit filed by some parents of those who died in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash. 

Sixteen people were killed and 13 were injured when an inexperienced truck driver went through a stop sign and into the path of the junior hockey team's bus at a rural intersection near Tisdale, Sask., on April 6, 2018. 

A few months after the crash, a lawsuit was brought by the families of five who died.

Tire tracks worn into the gravel roads that lead into James Smith Cree Nation are deeper than they were two weeks ago, remnants of the heavy police presence and the numerous funeral processions that followed.

Locals have returned to these roads, once again waving as they pass each other to run errands or visit family.

But as the sun sets, which is happening earlier than it did in early September, the fear creeps back in.

Award winning comedian performs at Fort’s 'Night of Comedy'

World-renowned comedian and actor Donovan Workun is performing in Fort Saskatchewan this weekend.

A Night of Comedy is an outdoor event at 100 Avenue and 102 Street hosted by the Fort Saskatchewan Downtown Business Council. Beer gardens, entertainment, and food from local restaurants will be there on Saturday (Sept. 24) starting at 4 p.m.

Workun will be performing with his comedy group Atomic Improv at 7 p.m., followed afterwards by local band Ham Sandwiches.

Workun started improv learning theatre in the early 80s while he was in junior high school in Edmonton.

Frost advisory issued for area

Environment Canada (EC) has issued a frost advisory for the area.

"Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to drop to below zero in most regions," EC said in a release. 

"Patchy to widespread frost is expected Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning."

The advisory is in place for Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, Bruderheim, Lamont, Morinville, Bon Accord and Gibbons.

Two more teens charged in Fort Saskatchewan assault

Two more teens have been charged following the group assault of an 18-year-old man last Wednesday (Sept.15).

A 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, both residents of Fort Saskatchewan, have each been charged with one count of assault. 

Another 16-year-old, who was arrested on the day of the attack, was also charged with assault and for failing to comply with a previous release order last week.

Canada's inflation rate cools in August but grocery prices continue to climb

Canada's annual inflation rate slowed to 7.0 per cent in August largely driven by the price of gasoline falling, but the cost of groceries continues to climb. 

In its latest monthly consumer price index (CPI) report, Statistics Canada said grocery prices rose at the fastest rate since 1981, with prices up 10.8 per cent compared with a year ago. 

Still, the national year-over-year inflation cooled more than economists predicted.

The federal agency said transportation and shelter prices drove the deceleration in consumer prices.
