Mounties looking to identify suspects after Morinville break and enter

Police are asking for the public's help identifying a couple of suspects. 

Just after 5:30 a.m. on Sunday (Aug. 28), Morinville RCMP say two men broke into Morinville Home Hardware on 100 Street and stole tools. 

The men are described as White and wearing dark clothing. They fled the area in a white GMC truck. 

Morinville RCMP hope the public can help identify the suspects; anyone with information is asked to contact the detachment at 780-939-1600. 

Environment Canada issues heat warning for region

A heat warning has been issued for the region.

Temperatures near 30 C in the daytime and overnight lows in the mid-teens are expected Tuesday (Aug. 30) and Wednesday, according to Environment Canada.

The heat warning is in effect for Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park, Morinville, as well as all of Sturgeon County, Strathcona County, and Lamont County.

Sherwood Park teen arrested for impaired driving

A Sherwood Park teen is facing impaired driving charges. 

Police responded to multiple 911 calls last Friday (Aug. 26) about a possible impaired driver heading south on Highway 21 in Sherwood Park. 

Upon arriving on the scene RCMP found the driver’s SUV in a collision with another vehicle at the intersection of Highway 21 and Baseline Road. Luckily, no injuries were reported at the scene. 

A lone 19-year-old woman was arrested for impaired driving and will appear in a Sherwood Park Provincial Court on Oct. 26.

Pete the peacock remains on the lam about two months after escape from N.B. garden

Pete the peacock flew the coop on his first night in Kingsbrae Garden, on the southern shores of New Brunswick. That was about two months ago — and it's been a wild goose chase ever since.

The fowl arrived June 16 in the town of Saint Andrews and was placed in quarantine before the one-year-old peacock could be introduced to others. 

"The following morning — Saturday morning — the cage was empty," said Brad Henderson, managing director of Kingsbrae Garden, a public garden that describes itself on its website as a "multi-award-winning, 27-acre horticultural masterpiece."

'Still a good day for Canada' despite delay of Artemis moon rocket launch: minister

Despite the test launch of NASA's new moon rocket being postponed on Monday morning, Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne said it was "still a good day for Canada."

Champagne, who was in Florida for a two-day trip that included meetings with Canadian astronauts and NASA officials, got up at 1:30 a.m. to head to the launch pad in Cape Canaveral only to see the mission delayed.

"Obviously we all wanted to be there to witness history," he told Canadian reporters in a teleconference from Orlando.

Strathcona County RCMP lay sexual assault charges on Edmonton man

Strathcona County RCMP has laid sexual assault charges on an Edmonton man. 

This follows an investigation after police received a complaint on June 22 from a woman who claimed she was assaulted during a massage at a Sherwood Park massage therapy centre.

Edmonton resident John Dorion, 39, was charged with one count of sexual assault. He was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 22. 

The RCMP believe this might not be an isolated incident and is asking any potential victims to contact them.

Sentencing hearing begins in Damien Starrett manslaughter trial

Damien Starrett's sentencing hearing started on Monday, two months after the Fort Saskatchewan man was convicted of manslaughter in the death of his one-year-old son, Ares, and assaulting his daughter, whose name is protected by a publication ban.

Ares was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to the Fort Saskatchewan Community Hospital on the evening of Nov. 23, 2019. The paramedic working that night told the court most of the baby's head was purple, and there was "considerable swelling" to one eye. Ares also had no pulse and no signs of breathing. 

Northern lights dazzle Fort Saskatchewan

Residents of Fort Saskatchewan were given a free light show Sunday night (Aug. 28) as the northern lights danced above the community. 

A ribbon of bright green light unravelled itself over the community resulting in a beautiful scene. 

The phenomenon, often associated with the winter season, can happen anytime throughout the year. The process that creates the magnificent display is charged particles colliding with gasses located in Earth’s upper atmosphere. 

Statistics Canada releases 2022 field crop estimates report

With the 2022 harvest started in many areas across the country, the federal government has compiled all the information it has to try and get a glimpse of how much is coming off the fields in terms of yield.

For the most part, numbers seem higher than they were in 2021 following a severe drought in the prairies, though some areas seem to still be working with little moisture.

Meanwhile, in Eastern Canada, much of southern Ontario experienced drier-than-average conditions, while eastern parts of Ontario and most of Quebec received higher-than-average rainfall.

Fort Sask Transfer Station closing for construction

Ongoing construction on the Fort Saskatchewan transfer and eco station will prompt a brief closure this week. 

Construction crews will be polishing up some final touches on phase one of the new station which will cause it to be closed from  Aug. 31 to  Sept. 1. 

The city has high expectations on what the new station can offer the community once construction finishes up this Fall.
