Adjustments to Harbour Pool's schedule have been a success

Harbour Pool continues to enjoy high attendance numbers.

After the pandemic kept people cooped up for much of 2020, Harbour Pool saw record attendance during Summer 2021. Between 2019 and then, the pool saw nearly a ten per cent increase in attendance and often hit max capacity.

In response to last year's increase, pool officials made adjustments to the 2022 schedule to accommodate an influx of swimmers.

Update: Fort Saskatchewan businesses destroyed in overnight fire

The Fort Saskatchewan Fire Department (FSFD) responded to a structure fire at a strip mall early Sunday morning (Aug. 14). 

Residents in the area of 10404 99 Avenue say thick smoke was seen billowing out of the building as crews fought the blaze. Police reportedly informed people nearby to shelter in place and be prepared to evacuate if the situation worsened.

FSFD was able to put out the blaze using the high angle of their aerial ladder truck. 

Canadian Blood Services in talks around paid donations of plasma as supply dwindles

Canadian Blood Services is in talks with companies that pay donors for plasma as it faces a decrease in collections.

The blood-collection agency issued a statement on Friday saying it is in "ongoing discussion with governments and the commercial plasma industry" on how to more than double domestic plasma collection to 50 per cent of supply.

Canadian Blood Services has previously cautioned that letting companies trade cash for plasma — a practice banned in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec — could funnel donors away from voluntary giving.

Poll suggests most Canadians view Pope's apology as step toward reconciliation

A poll suggests more than half of Canadians viewed the recent visit by Pope Francis and his apology for abuses at residential schools as a step toward reconciliation.

The Angus Reid Institute released the findings from its latest online poll in which nearly 60 per cent of participants said they saw the Pope's apology as a meaningful step toward reconciliation, while 32 per cent said it did nothing to move reconciliation forward.

Amanda Todd sextortion case sets precedent, but more needs to be done, experts say

The conviction of Aydin Coban for the "sextortion" of British Columbia teenager Amanda Todd has prompted calls from lawyers and advocates for more regulation, resources and education in Canada to protect future victims.

Lianna McDonald, executive director of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, said Todd's case served as a warning, but Canada "failed to act."

Missing youth located

An update on today's report of a missing child from Morinville RCMP.

They have announced 11-year-old Larry Nepentung, who also goes by the name of Luke Morkin has been found safe.

Construction at Highway 15 and 28A intersection causing delays

Expect delays on an area highway to continue for a while longer. 

Until Aug. 22, the intersection at Highway 15 and Highway 28A will be closed for left-hand turns for eastbound and southbound traffic due to paving operations in the area.

A detour route can be taken by turning left onto Highway 37.

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP lay charges regarding catalytic converter thefts

A Fort Saskatchewan woman is facing several charges regarding catalytic converter thefts. 

On Tuesday evening (Aug. 9), Fort Saskatchewan RCMP received a complaint about a woman who cut something off from underneath a vehicle and rode away a bicycle.

Police received a photo of the suspect and were able to locate her a short distance away.

Two catalytic converters were recovered and the female was in possession of a hand saw and bolt cutters despite being bound by a previous release order not to have break-in tools.

'Appalled:' Campers say sex offender was staying with children at U.S. campground

Campers say a convicted Canadian sex offender identified himself as security at a South Dakota campground, where he was staying with two children at the centre of a Saskatchewan Amber Alert with their mother.

Benjamin Martin Moore, 50, was located late Tuesday at a campground that takes part in the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in the state. Glencoe Camp Resort posted on social media that its security team assisted in locating and apprehending Moore. 

The campground did not respond to a request for comment.
