Fort Saskatchewan RCMP lay charges regarding catalytic converter thefts

A Fort Saskatchewan woman is facing several charges regarding catalytic converter thefts. 

On Tuesday evening (Aug. 9), Fort Saskatchewan RCMP received a complaint about a woman who cut something off from underneath a vehicle and rode away a bicycle.

Police received a photo of the suspect and were able to locate her a short distance away.

Two catalytic converters were recovered and the female was in possession of a hand saw and bolt cutters despite being bound by a previous release order not to have break-in tools.

'Appalled:' Campers say sex offender was staying with children at U.S. campground

Campers say a convicted Canadian sex offender identified himself as security at a South Dakota campground, where he was staying with two children at the centre of a Saskatchewan Amber Alert with their mother.

Benjamin Martin Moore, 50, was located late Tuesday at a campground that takes part in the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in the state. Glencoe Camp Resort posted on social media that its security team assisted in locating and apprehending Moore. 

The campground did not respond to a request for comment. 

NDP calls on local MLA to resign from cabinet position following controversial essay contest

A recent essay contest has been met with more backlash. 

Thursday (Aug. 11) morning, members of Alberta's official opposition were in Fort Saskatchewan to again denounce awarding a third place prize to a controversial essay in a recent contest. They called on the local MLA, Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, to step down as cabinet member.

Many people have benefited from swim lessons through the Canadian Red Cross over the past 75 years. We all remember the coloured badges we brought home from swim lessons, but the Red Cross will end its involvement with the program at the end of this year.

Monkeypox vaccine now widely available in Alberta

Vaccines for monkeypox are now available to every eligible Albertan looking for one.

As of Wednesday (Aug. 10), eligible Albertans aged 18 and older can now receive a monkeypox vaccine to prevent the virus from spreading. Monkeypox is endemic to Central and West Africa but has recently spread to regions it hasn’t been seen in before, such as Canada. 

The monkeypox virus is related to the smallpox virus but typically causes less severe illness. As of Thursday, there have been 16 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Alberta.  

Local football player receives scholarship from the Edmonton Elks

Parker Kellington has been putting in a lot of work during the off-season to showcase his football skills. 

From Aug. 3 to 7, Kellington took part in a University of Alberta Golden Bears prep football camp.

On the final day of the camp, it was announced that he would be receiving a $1000 scholarship courtesy of the Edmonton Elks to continue his development with the Golden Bears football program.

Kellington was selected for the scholarship by the head coach of the Golden Bears football program, Chris Morris. 

Investigator says missing Canadian woman found in Ohio after 42 years

On July 16, 1980, Dale Nancy Wyman left her Ottawa-area home with a suitcase full of her belongings, took a taxi to a Greyhound bus station and vanished. She didn't say where she was going and her family had no idea where to look. 

More than four decades later, a woman from Ohio contacted Wyman's siblings, who had never stopped looking for her. She had seen a video of Wyman's younger sister, Brenda Larche, asking for information to help the family find peace and closure, and realized the woman Larche was looking for was her mother. 

France feeling the impacts of Canada's 2021 drought through mustard shortage

The people of France are feeling the brunt of 2021's drought as mustard supplies seem to be running low in supermarkets across the nation.

France is the top consumer of mustard in the world and has been a staple of french households since the middle ages.

Varieties like Dijon and Reims are processed by international companies but have their seeds mostly grown in Canada, with Saskatchewan and Alberta contributing to the vast majority of that crop.

Children at centre of Saskatchewan Amber Alert found safe

Two children at the centre of a Saskatchewan Amber Alert were found at a campground in the United States along with their mother and a man wanted by police, Mounties said Wednesday.

Benjamin Martin Moore, 50, was apprehended near Sturgis, S.D. He is behind bars in Pennington County and jail records show he is being held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Marshals Service.

His common-law spouse is also in police custody.

A seven-year-old girl and eight-year-old boy were located with Moore and RCMP said they are safe. 

EICS releases school year calendar for Fort Sask, Strathcona County

Elk Island Catholic Schools released their 2022-23 school year calendar.

“The first day of school will be a staggered start for schools in Strathcona County, Fort Saskatchewan, and Vegreville on either Aug. 30 or 31 and all schools in Camrose begin Sept 1.,” ECIS wrote on a Facebook post. 

They also added that staff from your child's school would contact you to let you know which staggered start date applies to your school.
