Deadline for Alberta UCP leadership contestants; most have filed applications

It’s deadline day for those seeking to be the next leader of Alberta’s United Conservatives and most of the contestants have already filed their applications.

The cutoff is 5 p.m. for applicants to submit a package of forms and consent documents along with at least 1,000 signatures from across Alberta and at least $75,000 towards the entry fee and good behaviour deposit.

Two of the nine applicants — Travis Toews and Danielle Smith — have already had their applications formally accepted by the UCP.

Proposed changes coming to local federal electoral ridings

There could soon be changes to local federal electoral ridings. 

According to the Federal Electoral Boundaries Commissioner for Alberta, population growth and the addition of three new electoral districts will require adjustments to every electoral district in the province. Census data shows Alberta’s population grew from 3,645,257 in 2011 to 4,262,635 in 2021.

Papal visit will cause significant delays on area highways

The Pope's visit will require travellers to make alternate travel arrangements on area highways.

Rolling road closures are scheduled for sections of the Queen Elizabeth II Highway and Highways 2A, 16, 43, 611 and 633 from July 24 to 27 to accommodate the papal motorcade.

With the rolling closures, the highway will be closed both before and after the motorcade passes. Motorists can expect significant delays and should plan ahead and consider alternate routes where possible. 

Strathcona County RCMP Bike Patrol Unit returns after COVID-19 hiatus

On July 4, the Strathcona County RCMP's Bike Patrol Unit returned to the streets after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Bike Patrol Unit has been a fixture in Strathcona County for over 10 years. These officers monitor parks, bike trails, parking lots and other places that cruisers may not have access to.

AHS no longer requires its workforce to be vaccinated against COVID-19

Alberta Health Services (AHS) rescinded a policy which made COVID-19 immunization a condition of employment on Monday (July 18). 

The Immunization of Workers for COVID-19 policy came into effect in late 2021 during the Delta-variant wave of the virus. AHS has since stated that immunization without boosters has "limited effectiveness" in reducing transmission of the currently circulating Omicron variants. 

Ag industry issues joint statement on the upcoming Next Policy Framework for agriculture

Sherwood Park student commits to Volleyball Canada and U of Calgary

Life-long Sherwood Park resident Anya Fehr is setting her way to volleyball success.

Fehr is currently on the U19 women’s Canada Cup team and has also been selected to play for the National Excellence Program in the fall for Volleyball Canada.

“It’s great. I was honestly so surprised but I was really excited and super happy,” said Fehr.

The 16-year-old is entering Grade 12 at Strathcona Christian Academy (SCA) and has committed to playing volleyball for the University of Calgary Dinos when she graduates. 

Fort Sask U15 baseball team takes home gold at provincials

The Fort Saskatchewan Red Sox U15 A Tier 2 baseball team won gold at the provincial championships in Beaumont.

The tournament began on Friday evening (July 15), where they beat the Beaumont Bosox.

On Saturday (Jul 16), they won both of their games against Thorsby and Leduc and on Sunday (July 17), they played the Beaumont Bosox again for the gold medal.

The final score to secure them the championship title was 14-4.
