Severe thunderstorm watch issued for the Strathcona County area

The Strathcona County area is currently under a severe thunderstorm watch. 

Environment Canada reports that conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, hail and heavy rain.

Tonight, we will see a low of 13 C with rising winds and rain forecasted to begin around 4 p.m.

Edmonton, St.Albert and Morinville are also currently under the watch. 

UPDATE: Water truck rollover blocking traffic on Anthony Henday

Strathcona County RCMP were on scene of a large water truck rollover on Friday (July 8).

The accident took place on the Anthony Henday just north of the Highway 14 overpass and was blocking all southbound traffic. 

Police were diverting traffic onto other roads and warned drivers of major delays.

The scene was cleared in approximately two hours.

Rangers alumni Jordan Gustafson selected in NHL Draft

Former Fort Saskatchewan Ranger Jordan Gustafson has been drafted to the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2022 NHL Draft. 

He was chosen 79th overall after an impressive 52-point season with the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds last year.

Gustafson, an Ardrossan native played on the U16AAA and U18AAA teams during his time with the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers and just recently appeared in the Rangers Alumni Game on Jun. 15.

Rogers outage affects 911 calls, debit transactions and sends droves to coffee shops

Canadians woke up Friday morning to a widespread network outage at Rogers Communications Inc. that left many customers without mobile and internet service and caused trouble for 911 services, debit transactions and even Service Canada's beleaguered passport offices.

A notice on the Toronto-based telecommunications company's website said the outage was impacting both its wireless and home service customers and is also affecting phone and chat support. 

Transport Canada implements new fire safety prevention measures for railways

The Federal Government is taking action to improve rail safety and security.

This week, the Minister of Transport announced two new rail safety measures.

One will focus on railway-related fire prevention, while the other improves the resiliency of Canada's railway infrastructure against climate change impacts, such as flooding, landslides, and fire risks. 

New rules are now in place to help prevent fires on railway property and in nearby communities.

Rogers outage disrupts wireless and wireline services nationwide

Rogers is experiencing an outage that is affecting vital services nationwide.

In a statement made this morning through the company's Twitter page, Rogers said they are working to restore their wireless and wireline services as soon as possible.

Services such as 9-1-1 calls from cell phones, Interac, real-time transit information and internet are down for all Rogers customers.

Province announces funding to create 10,000 new childcare spaces

More childcare spaces will soon be available in Alberta.

The Alberta-Canada Early Learning and Child Care agreement signed with the federal government in Nov. 2021 aims to provide $10/day childcare for parents by 2025/2026.

As part of the agreement, the provincial government has a target to create 42,500 additional spaces in non-profit child-care programs by the end of 2026. This year, Alberta has committed to creating 10,000 of these new spaces.

Lamont High valedictorian Elizabeth Goudman reflects on high school experience

Elizabeth Goudman is this year’s valedictorian at Lamont High School.

The recent graduate began her high school career in 2019, just months before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down in-person learning and other regular school activities. 

“I don’t think you ever really get used to doing classes online, but I think, all things considered, it was better than what it could have been,” she said.

She described her high school experience as a lot of hard work, but she’s grateful to everyone within the school community.
