Local artist Josh Sahunta hits Stampede Coca-Cola Stage

Local R&B-pop artist Josh Sahunta is getting set to hit the Calgary Stampede Coca-Cola Stage. 

The self-taught multi-instrumentalist and singer will perform on the stage Tuesday (Jul. 12), beginning at 12:30 p.m. The Coca-Cola Stage is always one of the most anticipated parts of the Stampede, featuring a wide range of award-winning artists.

July Talk, Carly Rae Jepsen, Tokyo Police Club, Alessia Cara, Milky Chance, and Alexisonfire will all perform at this year's event.

Bear sighting on highway through Elk Island National Park

Sunday afternoon (July 10), Karen Bowhay snapped an up-close picture of a mother bear and her cub.

Bowhay was picking up her grandsons in Lamont and was heading home to Leslieville when she saw the two crossing the street.

The encounter happened in Elk Island National Park on the road from Lamont connecting to Highway 16.

While it’s not common, there are bear sightings in and around the nearby national park.

The signs of heatstroke and preventative measures

With warmer weather on the way, Alberta doctors are concerned about the dangers of heatstroke. 

Heatstroke occurs when the body fails to regulate its own temperature and continues to rise without relief. 

“Although most individuals can manage moderate summer weather without symptoms, even healthy individuals need to be vigilant about heat safety when temperatures rise,” said Michael Zakhary, a medical officer of health with Alberta Health Services (AHS).

Minister directs telecoms to reach agreement on assisting each other during outages

Canada’s industry minister has directed the country’s major telecom companies to reach agreements on emergency roaming, assisting each other during outages and a communication protocol to better inform Canadians during emergencies.

François-Philippe Champagne also said that Canada’s broadcast regulator, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, will investigate the recent massive Rogers Communications outage.

Former NHLer to join Fort Sask Rangers hockey coaching staff

The Rangers Athletic Club (RAC) has selected a new head coach for its U16 AA team. 

Former Vancouver Canuck, Zenith Komarniski, will take over the age group for the 2022-23 season. 

Born in Edmonton, Komarniski was drafted to the NHL in 1996. He played 18 games with the Canucks and was later traded to The Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2003 - 2004 season. Komarniski spent most of his career playing in the WHL and the AHL under affiliate teams.

Five Edmonton-area players taken in NHL Draft

Five players from the capital region were selected in the NHL Draft. 

From St. Albert, and taken with the 9th overall pick, was Matthew Savoie. The 18-year-old centre was picked by the Buffalo Sabres. Savoie spent a short amount of time with the Sherwood Park Crusaders in the 2020-2021 season before playing with the Winnipeg Ice in the WHL. 

It was a dream come true for Spruce Grove teenager, Reid Schaefer. Schaefer, 19, was taken 32nd by the Edmonton Oilers after recently spending time with the Seattle Thunderbirds. 

Canadian household budgets stretched thin as inflation, interest rates rise: Survey

A new poll indicates Canadians are making increasingly tough budget decisions amid rising interest rates and inflation.

The MNP Ltd. survey, conducted by Ipsos in early June, suggests over a quarter of Canadians are cutting back on essentials like food, housing and utilities. 

The poll found nearly half of respondents are reining in non-essential spending on outings like travelling, dining out and entertainment.

About a third of those surveyed also reported buying cheaper versions of everyday items and driving less to save on fuel costs.  

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP warn of ‘sextortion’ scam targeting young men

The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP is warning the public about a rise in 'sextortion' cases targeting young men. 

The cases involve scammers initiating a fake relationship online and convincing victims to send intimate images; once they have received the photos, the scammers threaten to distribute them unless they are paid. According to police, six incidents of online extortion targeting men between 17 and 25 have been reported in the Fort Saskatchewan area since the beginning of May.
