Keep an eye out for playground zones this summer, city says

With the end of school also comes the end of school zones in Fort Saskatchewan. 

As summer heats up and more kids are out and about, the city urges drivers to pay attention to times when playground zones are in effect.

School zones only take effect when school is in session. However, playground zones are in effect year-round, daily from 8:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset.  

JDRF walk raises over $15,000 for diabetes research

A walk for diabetes research in Fort Saskatchewan doubled its fundraising goal. 

On Sunday (Jun. 26), the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and Sun Life held a five kilometre walk at West River’s Edge.

The money raised from this annual event goes towards research and development into finding a cure for type 1 diabetes.

“We’ve been involved in the walk since our daughter was diagnosed in 2008,” said Ken Henitiuk, the co-chair for the Fort Saskatchewan JDRF walk. 

Police chief says two suspects dead, no members of public hurt in B.C. bank shootout

The chief of police in Saanich, British Columbia, says it is truly amazing that no members of the public were hurt during a gunfight at a bank in which two robbery suspects died.

Chief Const. Dean Duthie says two suspects who were believed to be wearing body armour died Tuesday in the gun battle with police outside a Bank of Montreal. 

Six members of the Greater Victoria emergency response team were hurt, three of them seriously enough to require surgery. 

Duthie says the emergency response team happened to be deployed nearby and was on the scene within minutes.

Man dies after colliding with a semi on Highway 28

A man has died after his pick-up truck collided with a semi.

At 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday (Jun. 28), RCMP and emergency services responded to the collision on Highway 28 and Township Road 582 in Thorhild County.

Police believe the pickup truck crossed the centre line and collided with the semi hauling an empty Super B tank. 

The RCMP confirmed the driver of the pickup truck died from his injuries. 

A man in the semi escaped with only minor injuries after his truck caught fire due to the collision. 

Update: STARS dispatched to incident near Redwater

STARS was on the scene of a single-vehicle rollover Tuesday (Jun. 28) morning.

Multiple emergency vehicles and STARS air ambulance were reportedly on the scene of an incident on Range Road 221 just south of Township Road 572. 

Reports came in around 8:20 a.m.

It is also part of the country's critical infrastructure, essential to the health and well-being of all Canadians, stated an Agriculture and Agri-Food media release.

Prime Minister Trudeau pledges more aid and loans to Ukraine at G7 summit

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced more money for Ukraine on Tuesday — including a $200-million loan through the International Monetary Fund — at the end of the Group of Seven leaders' summit in Germany.

Canada's contribution comes as G7 leaders committed to phase out or ban the import of Russian coal and oil in response to that country's war with Ukraine and the ensuing energy crisis sparked by the invasion.

Trudeau said Canada remains determined to support Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Spraying 101

Spraying is a key job on the farm right now as producers focus on weed, insect and disease control.

The Nozzle Guy Tom Wolf with Sprayers 101 says a key factor with spraying is always waste loss. 

Wolf says research has shown that producers can see a significant waste loss in efficiency in the sprayer by as much as 15 per cent when priming, cleaning or over filling the tank for the field.
