Three taken to hospital following collision near Morinville

A Sturgeon County collision landed three people in the hospital Thursday (Jun. 16) evening.

Around 5:15 p.m., Morinville RCMP was called to a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 2 at Township Road 554 (Cardiff Road) just south of Morinville. 

Police say the accident happened when four vehicles, stopped at a set of lights on Highway 2, were hit from behind by a tow truck carrying two additional vehicles.

Two people were released from hospital the other is in serious but stable condition.

Fort Saskatchewan responds better than expected to new speed limits

Fort Saskatchewan has so far responded well to the new speed limits.

While drivers got used to the new changes during the 30-day grace period (May 16 - Jun. 16), officials with the city say about a dozen warnings were given to drivers. This is lower than expected, according to the director of protective services, Coreen Rayner, who noted good compliance within the community regarding the new limits.

New water wheelchair access in Strathcona County

A new water wheelchair will be available at some Strathcona County spray parks this summer.

The chair has been nicknamed the "Sea Horse" by staff and is specifically built to be all-terrain and water-resistant.

"This aquatic wheelchair is specifically designed for the outdoors and getting soaking wet. It will help provide children and youth with disabilities with a new way to experience spray parks," said  Dennis Franklin, the partnership business development advisor for Strathcona County.

Edmonton out of the running to be a FIFA World Cup host city

Unfortunately, Edmonton is out of the running to be a FIFA World Cup 2026 host city.

In an announcement this afternoon, it has been determined that the closest we will get to the action is either Vancouver or Toronto in Canada.

Edmonton mayor Amarjeet Sohi expressed disappointment in the decision.

"I am proud of the bid that we put forward, and I will explore other ways to put Edmonton on the world stage," said Sohi.

The tournament will take place across the USA, Mexico and Canada.

CN Rail receives strike notice

About 750 Canadian National Railway employees are threatening to strike beginning on Saturday.

The company announced Wednesday that it received a 72-hour strike notice from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Wages and benefits are two of the main issues.

CN remains optimistic that an agreement can be reached without a labour disruption.

The City of Fort Saskatchewan is getting ready to host Forward Together: Indigenous Peoples Day in Fort Saskatchewan

On Jun. 21, you can see a variety of performances from Indigenous dancers, musicians and speakers.

Fort High teacher wins impressive coaching award

A Fort Saskatchewan High School teacher was awarded the Metro Athletics Boys Volleyball Coach of the Year for Division 4.

Kory Wlos looks after nearly every aspect of physical education at the school from classes to teams. 

"[I'm] happy but I felt that it's actually a team award," said Wlos.

This is his second time winning a Coach of the Year award from Metro Athletics.

“Sometimes we have kids that come in that never played high level competitive volleyball and then all of a sudden I ask them to go in certain situations and they do well.” 

Police continue to search for suspect who pointed gun at woman

Police have issued a sketch in hopes of identifying a man who they say pointed a gun at a woman in Strathcona County.

Just after 9 p.m. on May 14, Strathcona County RCMP responded to a 911 call involving a gun at an area known as “The End of The World," a lookout point north of Highway 16 on Township Road 540 near Sherwood Park.

According to police, the victim, a woman, got into a verbal argument with an unknown man when he told her he had a gun. When the man returned to his vehicle, he pointed what was believed to be a handgun at the woman.

Redwater man and niece cycle across Canada for Crohn's

Robert and Karley Finnegan are an uncle and niece duo cycling across Canada to raise funds and awareness for Crohn's disease. 

Residing on a farm just outside of Redwater, the two made the trip to Victoria, B.C., on May 26 to dip their bike tires in the Pacific Ocean to signify the start of their journey.

Now, they are just over 20 days into their trip and have run into many ups and downs, primarily due to the extreme weather conditions in southern Alberta.
