Lamont teacher wins national award for her efforts in Indigenous education

A Lamont teacher has won the 2021 Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Michel Blades Bird is a teacher at The Ranch Learning Centre, a school part of Elk Island's Child and Youth Ranch. According to the ranch, many students who attend this school have severe emotional or behavioural issues, do not thrive in a community school setting and are children growing up in government care.

Fort Lions to host grand opening for expanded Turner Park campground

The Fort Lions Club is hosting a grand opening for the Turner Park Campground expansion.

The campground is known for its beautiful location in the heart of Turner Park, right by the North Saskatchewan River. After eight years of trying for an expansion, the Lions have finally had their wish come true. 

Although the expansion was built last year, Friday (Jun. 10) marks the day of their grand opening and open house for the new and improved campground. The event is free and includes hot dogs, cupcakes, cold drinks, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony around noon. 

New detachment commander for Fort RCMP

Meet the Fort Saskatchewan RCMP's newest detachment commander.

Inspector Barry LaRocque is a 30-year member of the RCMP and comes to Fort Saskatchewan from Yellowknife, NWT, although most of his career has been in Alberta. His first-ever posting was to Cold Lake, where he spent five years before transferring to Edmonton, working in plain clothes policing and drug enforcement.

PM sidesteps guest-list controversy, urges focus on 'important issues' at L.A. summit

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau isn't saying whether he supports President Joe Biden's decision to exclude Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba from this week's Summit of the Americas. 

Trudeau acknowledges that some of the countries in the Western Hemisphere are "less like-minded" than others. 

But he says they all share a number of urgent issues, such as migration pressures, climate change and recovering fully from the COVID-19 pandemic. 

All three are expected to be on the agenda at the weeklong summit as the prime minister departs for Los Angeles later today. 

Update: One person taken to hospital in Highway 21 collision

One person has been taken to hospital after a crash in Fort Saskatchewan.

At around 3:45 p.m. on Monday afternoon (June 6), emergency services responded to a two-vehicle collision at the Highway 21 and Westpark Boulevard intersection. 

At least two occupants were removed from a white vehicle -- one was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries. 

No word yet on the cause of the collision. 

As of 5:30 p.m. the area has been cleared.

Agriculture value chain organizations call for establishment of Indo-Pacific Diversification Office

Representatives from the Canola Council of Canada, Cereals Canada, and Pulse Canada met last week in Ottawa with government decision makers about the establishment of a diversification office in the Indo-Pacific region. 

A newly released joint-commissioned report outlines why Canada must take strategic steps to secure its agricultural export growth, diversification and competitiveness in a key export region. 

A key pillar of the report is the creation of a Canadian Indo-Pacific Diversification Office.

Pancake breakfast supporting Ukrainians raises thousands

A fundraiser for Ukrainian refugees brought in a flood of donations. 

Approximately 500 people gathered at the Lamont Arena Saturday (Jun. 4) morning for a pancake breakfast fundraiser in support of Ukrainians displaced by the war.  

The morning kicked off with a land acknowledgment followed by a singing of O Canada. Town of Lamont mayor Kirk Perrin offered greetings on behalf of the town, Lakeland MP Shannon Stubbs, and the Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce.  

Police investigating grab-and-dash from Morinville liquor store

A suspect is being sought in connection with a theft from a Morinville liquor store. 

On May 22, around 7:30 p.m., a man entered the store and spent about five minutes gathering four large liquor bottles before fleeing, knocking over several boxes along the way. 

He ran into a back alley and got into a green pickup truck. 

He is described as being tall and lanky, with shorter black hair. He was dressed in all black with jeans, a tank top, and a baseball cap.

Canada celebrates final days of Queen's Platinum Jubilee festivities

Canadians across the country organized parties, donned traditional British garb and planted trees over the weekend as they joined the world in celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee marking her 70 years on the throne.

The Canadian festivities were more muted affairs compared to the boisterous, four-day party that took place in London in honour of the occasion.
