Strathcona County adjusts capital spending priorities for 2022

Strathcona County has made a few adjustments to prioritize capital spending in 2022. 

Some projects will be moving ahead under a limited scope, while others will be waiting for municipal dollars after council met on May 17 to adjust its capital spending plan. 

The county approved a 2.18 per cent tax increase for 2022, which they say will allow them to maintain programs and service levels while tacking operational and inflationary pressures. 

Town of Lamont investigating presence of wild boars in area

A nearby community is on alert after sightings of wild boars were reported to town officials. 

On May 24, the Town of Lamont issued a notice alerting residents of the sighting. According to the town's chief administrative officer, Rick Bastow, the sightings have been inconclusive so far, but the town is taking them seriously.

Trial drug could prolong the life of Sherwood Park sisters

Sherwood Park sisters Ayva and Halla Ahlefed could see some hope on the horizon with a trial drug. 

Ayva, 18, and Halla, 15, were both diagnosed with Labrune Syndrome in elementary school after having multiple seizures.

This extremely rare genetic disease causes progressive degeneration of the brain where a mix of cerebral white matter disease, intracranial calcification, and cysts invade the brain and cause loss of function. 

Emerald Hills Leisure Centre to close for repairs

Swimmers in Sherwood Park will have to look for another water hole this summer. 

From Jun. 28 to Aug. 5, Emerald Hills Leisure Centre will close while crews work to install a new system to address leaks in the kid's pool. 

The leisure centre discovered leaks in the kid's pool area after it was re-filled following COVID-19 shutdowns. All pools in the centre will be inspected for possible future pool leaks/closures during the closure. 

Free admission to provincial sites in honour of Queen's Platinum Jubilee

This weekend is packed with events celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee.

Between June 3-5, free admission will be offered to provincial historic sites, museums, and interpretive centres in honour of Queen Elizabeth II's 70-year reign. This will include places such as the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village in Lamont County and the Royal Alberta Museum.

Lots in store this season for Edmonton Elite Football Club

General manager and vice president of the Edmonton Elite Football Club, Matthew Wilson, hopes to make the team's second season in Fort Saskatchewan a special one.  
 
The Elite is looking to build off last year’s success after the team went undefeated through the season, losing only in the championship game to the Central Alberta Buccaneers. In addition to the on-field excitement, Wilson says they’re in the works to bring even more fun to the fan experience. 

Missing girls located

Police have located two missing girls. 

13-year-old Jay-Lynne Cochrane of Sturgeon County and 15-year-old Tyre Marie Danais of High Prairie were reported missing from Sturgeon County on Sunday (May 29) but have since been located, according to RCMP.

"Thank you to the public for your assistance in this matter," Morinville RCMP wrote in a release.

Wading pool prepares for July opening

The Fort Lions are preparing the wading pool for the summer season.

The wading pool, located on 104 Street opposite Below Ten, has been in operation since the early 1960s. Open in July and August; the pool is designed for children eight and under to cool off from the sun, free of charge.

The pool opens later in the summer due to its staff being made up of students. July and August are also the biggest months of the year when people are looking for ways to cool off.
