Province says relief is on the way for the EMS crisis

The Government of Alberta is working to address issues within the EMS system.

On Thursday (May 26), a conference was held at Fire Station 6 in Strathcona County. Government representatives, AHS members and frontline workers met to discuss a plan of action to provide some relief to the emergency medical system. 

All of the EMS advisory committee recommendations were approved. The recommendations focused on four main areas of improvement; increased staffing, improved coverage, fixing offload delays and better dispatch.

Environment Appeals Board to hear from area farmer after wetlands removed

Alberta’s Environmental Appeals Board is set for a hearing later this year after wetlands were found to have been filled on land in Lamont County. 

The board will hear submissions regarding an Enforcement Order handed to Jim Gerber and JimCo Farming Inc. for conducting “unauthorized activities in wetlands located at SW-53-16-W4M in Lamont County.” 

Canada Day parade cancelled in Sherwood Park

The annual Canada Day Parade in Sherwood Park has been cancelled indefinitely.

Back in 2002, when a non-profit was no longer able to host the event, the Sherwood Park and District Chamber of Commerce took over the event on what was meant to be a short-term basis while they searched for another host.

After twenty years of running the parade, the Chamber issued a statement announcing that the parade had been cancelled. The last parade hosted in Sherwood Park was in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

New progress pride flag crosswalks displayed in Strathcona County

An upgrade has arrived for the painted pride crosswalks connecting Festival Avenue and Festival Lane in Sherwood Park.

The classic rainbow flag design, originally created in 1978, has now transitioned to a more inclusive progress flag design. Strathcona County wanted to reflect this newly adopted symbol and repainted the crosswalk to show its commitment to diversity and representation. 

"It has some different elements in it that represent people who are Black, Indigenous and people of colour," said mayor Rod Frank.

Fort Saskatchewan's Transfer Station to close temporarily

Due to construction work, Fort Saskatchewan’s Transfer Station and Recycle Depot will temporarily close from June 6 to 10.  

For those who cannot wait to get rid of unwanted materials during this time, the city recommends visiting nearby transfer stations, including the Broadview Enviroservice Station in Strathcona County.  

Fort Saskatchewan's Hair Mantra a finalist at 2022 Alberta Business Awards

Hair Mantra in Fort Saskatchewan has been selected as a finalist for the 2022 Alberta Business Awards of Distinction in the Diversity category.  

The downtown hair salon was nominated to the provincial level after winning the Inclusion and Diversity award at the 2021 Fort Saskatchewan & District Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.

Canada shipping 20,000 rounds of artillery ammunition to Ukraine

Canada has purchased more than 20,000 rounds of artillery ammunition for Ukraine, Defence Minister Anita Anand said Tuesday.

Anand, speaking at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Victoria, said the $98-million purchase will include the needed fuses and charge bags and comes from the $500-million Ukrainian military aid package announced in April's federal budget.

She said the rounds, which are the NATO artillery standard of 155 millimetre and will work with the artillery guns Canada shipped to Ukraine in April, are "exactly what Ukraine has asked allies to provide."

The Fort Saskatchewan Farmers' Market is back for the summer

The farmers' market is set to return for the summer.

The event, put on by the Fort Saskatchewan and District Chamber of Commerce, will run every Thursday from June 9 until Sept. 14 for a total of 15 markets. 

From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. you can shop for local goods, listen to live music and enjoy snacks from a variety of food trucks. 

To celebrate the opening day on June 9 there will be free hot dogs available for the first 1000 people who attend the market.
