Provincial and federal governments increase funding to bring high-speed internet to Alberta

More funding is being put towards bringing high-speed internet to rural and Indigenous communities in Alberta. 

Over the last year, the federal and provincial governments have been working together to bring more funding to this project. On Wednesday (Mar.9), officials announced that they would increase their combined funding to $390-million each over the next four years.

Cattle Industry concerned over potential rail strike

The Canadian Cattle Industry is on the verge of another critical situation.

CP Rail and the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference Union are set to go back to the bargaining table on Friday in an effort to avert a potential strike that could come as early as March 16th.

An overwhelming majority, 96.7 per cent, of the more than 3000 members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference voted in favor of strike action earlier this month.

Canadian Foodgrains Bank raising funds for Ukraine relief

=In response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces, Canadian Foodgrains Bank and other leading Canadian aid agencies – through the Humanitarian Coalition – are launching an appeal to raise funds and rush emergency assistance to people in need.

Approximately 2.9 million people were already in need of humanitarian assistance before the invasion, a figure which is expected to rise exponentially.

Canada sending another $50 million in specialized equipment to Ukraine: Trudeau

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada is sending another $50 million in specialized equipment, including Canadian-made surveillance drones, to help Ukraine defend itself against the Russian invasion.

Trudeau says he spoke to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by phone to inform him of the additional aid.

He says Zelenskyy also accepted an invitation to address Canada's parliament.

Trudeau says there have been some logistical challenges getting promised weapons and military equipment into Ukraine, but they are not insurmountable.

AHS employees no longer required to be immunized

Alberta Health Services (AHS) will rescind its mandatory vaccination policy for staff as of Thursday, March 10 at 4 p.m.

Health minister Jason Copping says the pandemic has shown more beds, more staff and more resiliency is needed at health care facilities to deal with any future crisis.

The government has already budgeted $300-million for ICU beds across Alberta and AHS is working to recruit and train the staff that will be needed to operate these new beds.

Copping says that the need for staff is why he's directed AHS to drop its mandate.

Lucas Pierce and family shocked by huge donation to help with cancer treatment

A Fort Saskatchewan family was given a big surprise.

Lucas Pierce is a three-year-old boy that was recently diagnosed with cancer. Given that his type of cancer is undiagnosed, doctors have had a difficult time treating him and his family was eventually told Pierce's best chance is to get special radiation treatment in Florida.

Missing teenager found safe

Strathcona County RCMP has good news about a missing teenager.

They sent out a police release Tuesday afternoon (Mar.8) to inform the public that 14-year-old Dylan Vane had gone missing.

She'd last been seen at her Sherwood Park residence on Sunday.

Shortly after, police confirmed they have found Vane and she is safe.
