Police identify victim of fatal hit-and-run, asking for help from the public

More information has been released on a hit-and-run.

In the early morning of Feb. 26, the Morinville RCMP were called to Highway 28 about a kilometre north of the Anthony Henday. Police were informed a pedestrian had been killed in a hit-and-run collision.

The victim has since been identified as 19-year-old Angel Cardinal from Edmonton.

RCMP are continuing to investigate what happened and are asking for help from the public.

There are currently three types of COVID-19 tests international travellers are allowed to use:

  • Negative rapid antigen test mentioned within a day of travel
  • Negative PCR test within 72 hours of return to Canada
  • Positive PCR test from 10 to 180 days from the date of your return

The antigen test is significantly cheaper in Canada and abroad.

Road report and bus cancellations for March 8

Roads in and around the area are in fair to poor winter driving conditions. 

There is blowing snow, drifting in spots and icy sections over many highways in the heartland on Tuesday morning (Mar. 8). 

In a Facebook post, Titan Towing said there are vehicles in the ditch on Highway 15 to Lamont, Highway 29 and Highway 37. 

Currently, there are no major collisions in the area. 

School buses

As for the school buses, the major cancellations are through the Elk Island Public School Division. 

Federal Agriculture Minister comments on International Women's Day

Today is International Women's Day!

Women have always played a key role on the farm and ranch and in the Agriculture industry as a whole.

Some people have viewed the agriculture industry as a mainly male dominated industry, but women have always played an important role keeping the family fed while helping out on the farm and ranch.

Women take on many roles whether it's running the books, running equipment, planning and marketing off-farm commodity sales, running for parts, hauling grain or working with and marketing livestock.

RCMP gave banks police info on Ottawa protesters with list of accounts to freeze

The RCMP told MPs Monday that it only gave the names of people directly involved in Ottawa protests to banks to freeze their accounts, and not supporters who donated to the Freedom Convoy.

The lists of protesters given to banks included personal details from the police database, such as whether protesters had been suspected of other crimes, had witnessed crimes or had other "dealings" with the police, as well as personal information such as age and height. 

Elk Island Public Schools cancels some of Tuesday's buses

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) has cancelled some of Tuesday's (Mar. 8) buses.

In a release, the school division says they've scrapped buses serving Andrew, Bruderheim, Lamont, Mundare and Vegreville.

The cancellation includes all morning and afternoon routes. 

"Families impacted were contacted directly," EIPS said in the release. 

Schools will remain open, and classes will continue as scheduled.

Travel not recommended on some area highways

Wind gusts, blowing snow and drifts are causing some issues on area highways. 

This afternoon, police responded to a collision on Highway 16 by Mundare involving two semi-trucks. Traffic is still slow going on the westbound portion of the highway.

Police said there were no injuries.

According to reports to MIX 107, Highway 15, 21, 28, 28A, 37 are in poor driving condition. 

Alberta 511 says Highway 16, 29, 45 are not recommended for travel. 

Provincial government temporarily cutting fuel tax, giving energy rebates

The provincial government is taking measures they say will help lower costs for Albertans.

Alberta’s government will temporarily stop the collection of the provincial fuel tax as of April 1. Currently, Albertans pay 13 cents per litre in fuel tax.
