Rachel Notley goes door to door in Fort Saskatchewan to talk about resident needs

Alberta NDP leader Rachel Notley was in Fort Saskatchewan over the weekend.

The former premier was going door-to-door campaigning with Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA candidate Taneen Rudyk on Saturday (Apr. 15). 

"Fort Saskatchewan is a critically important city in Alberta," said Notley. "It's a linchpin to the economic development that comes through the heartland."

The event began outside the Sportsplex on 89 Street, where Notley was joined by several dozen volunteers and even Edmonton-Riverview MLA Lori Sigurdson.

Oilers playoff fever hits Fort Saskatchewan sports bars

The Canada Grains Council has a new president

Erin Gowriluk becomes president of the Canada Grains Council after serving as executive director of the Grain Growers of Canada (GGC).

She has an extensive background in the grains sector.  During her time at the GGC she managed day-to-day operations and advanced federal policy work. She has also held senior policy roles with Syngenta Canada, and the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions., as its president. 

Gowriluk says she's honoured to lead the organization, which includes representation from the entire value chain.

The City of Fort Saskatchewan is once again offering up a variety of community grants to residents. 

Similar to how Strathcona County operates, the city also has some funding available for residents and non-profits looking to host events or kick-start a community project. 

There are two types of readily available grants in Fort Saskatchewan which are the Shape Your Community grant and the Grants to Organizations program. 

Federal workers to strike Wednesday if union, government don't reach deal by Tuesday

The country's largest federal public service union says if a deal isn't reached with the federal government by 9 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, it will launch a strike this Wednesday.

The Public Service Alliance of Canada says some 155,000 employees are prepared to walk off the job, including 35,000 workers from the Canada Revenue Agency.

Mediated contract negotiations between the union and the Treasury Board continued over the weekend in what the union described as the government's final chance to reach a deal.

Residential property taxes could be on the rise in Fort Saskatchewan

Property values across Fort Saskatchewan are up, which could mean higher property taxes. 

The city recently underwent its annual process of evaluating property values, with a report on the findings being presented to council last week. 

"We had assessment growth within residential [homes]," said Shannon Andruchow, the manager of budget and financial planning for Fort Saskatchewan. 

"The total growth was $123 million." 

The large increase might seem a bit surprising, but Andruchow says inflation had a big influence on the sharp rise. 

Bruderheim goaltender settles for silver at World Championships

The pride of Bruderheim didn't quite have the golden weekend she anticipated. 

Emerance Maschmeyer added to their rapidly growing medal count as she settled for a silver medal while playing with Team Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Women's Hockey Championship. 

The medal came courtesy of a 6-3 loss to Team USA at Sunday (Apr. 16) night's gold medal game that came down to the final minutes. 

Maschmeyer didn't see action in the gold medal game. Despite that, she delivered when she got the chance to play in the tournament. 

RCMP release funeral details for fallen Strathcona County officer

The RCMP has revealed more information regarding Cst. Harvinder 'Harvey' Singh Dhami's regimental funeral. 

The 32-year-old officer was killed in a collision earlier this month while responding to a noise complaint call in Strathcona County. 

The funeral will take place on Thursday (Apr. 20) at Millenium Place in Sherwood Park. 

In a press conference, Superintendent Dale Kendall remembered Dhami's contributions to the RCMP's emergency medical response team (EMRT).
