Slaughter cow prices continue to show increases across the Prairies

Last week in Manitoba feeder steer prices saw a $21 per cwt drop for the 900+ category for an average price of $216.33 per cwt. The biggest increase was $8.27 per cwt for the 501-600 pound steers for an average price of $327.32 per cwt. The biggest increase for feeder heifers was $8.63 per cwt for the 801-900 pound category for an average price of $234.38 per cwt. The biggest drop was for the 900+ category down $8.67 per cwt for an average price of $207.83 per cwt. Slaughter cow D1-D2 prices were up $3.37 per cwt for an average of $122.22.

Ardrossan NHL player nets first career playoff goal

An Ardrossan NHL player helped out his team when it counted on Monday (Apr. 17) night. 

Sam Steel, who hails from Ardrossan and played the majority of his minor hockey in Sherwood Park, netted a critical goal for the Minnesota Wild in Game One of their first-round series against the Dallas Stars. 

It was a beauty of a first, with Steel taking a pass in his own zone, breaking through two Dallas defenders and beating goaltender Jake Oettinger over the blocker to tie the game at 2-2. 

Families First Healing Homes receive huge donation

Fort Saskatchewan's Families First Society received a generous donation from a local resident.

The Raymond James Canada Foundation (RJCF) and Steve Switzer donated a total of $72,000 to help the society with their Healing Homes project.

Switzer has helped with Healing Homes before, he had even pitched the idea to Families First Society back in late 2021, with the help of his friend Mike Hankirk.

At first, the two had the idea of creating a women's shelter in Fort Saskatchewan, but Families First suggested they create second-stage housing instead.

Thousands of Canadians missed out on federal housing and dental benefits: report

A new report says hundreds of thousands of Canadians may have missed out on government money intended to help with the rising cost of living because the housing and dental benefits rolled out last year have had "atrocious" take-up. 

The analysis by David Macdonald, senior economist at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, assesses both benefits, as well as how much the federal government has actually spent on the measures. 

Gibbons hopes new school will replace existing schools

The proposed new K-to-9 school in Gibbons would replace the town's two other existing schools. 

Gibbons Mayor Dan Deck was joined by Sturgeon Public School officials on Monday (Apr. 17) afternoon to officially announce the collaboration between the town and school division.

The announcement was made across the street from Landing Trails School, in front of the land where the new school would be located. 

Rachel Notley goes door to door in Fort Saskatchewan to talk about resident needs

Alberta NDP leader Rachel Notley was in Fort Saskatchewan over the weekend.

The former premier was going door-to-door campaigning with Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA candidate Taneen Rudyk on Saturday (Apr. 15). 

"Fort Saskatchewan is a critically important city in Alberta," said Notley. "It's a linchpin to the economic development that comes through the heartland."

The event began outside the Sportsplex on 89 Street, where Notley was joined by several dozen volunteers and even Edmonton-Riverview MLA Lori Sigurdson.

Oilers playoff fever hits Fort Saskatchewan sports bars

The Edmonton Oilers is preparing for the start of their playoff run tonight, and so are some local bars. 

Having the local team in the Stanley Cup playoffs is a big deal for sports bars around Fort Saskatchewan, as fans look for places to watch the biggest games of the year. 

Pots Bar and Grill is among the places anticipating a good turnout for Edmonton's Game One matchup against the LA Kings on Monday (Apr. 17) night. 

The Canada Grains Council has a new president

Erin Gowriluk becomes president of the Canada Grains Council after serving as executive director of the Grain Growers of Canada (GGC).

She has an extensive background in the grains sector.  During her time at the GGC she managed day-to-day operations and advanced federal policy work. She has also held senior policy roles with Syngenta Canada, and the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions., as its president. 

Gowriluk says she's honoured to lead the organization, which includes representation from the entire value chain.

Similar to how Strathcona County operates, the city also has some funding available for residents and non-profits looking to host events or kick-start a community project. 

There are two types of readily available grants in Fort Saskatchewan which are the Shape Your Community grant and the Grants to Organizations program.
