Strathcona County passed their new Community Standards Bylaw last week, but what does this mean for residents?

At last Tuesday's (Mar. 14) council meeting the bylaw was passed, which aims to better represent the county's overall approach to establishing clear standards of presentation and accountability.

This includes repealing three previous bylaws and incorporating them into this new bylaw, which serves as a comprehensive guide for neighbourhood disputes.

What is causing the poor air quality in the region?

In a quick turn, the region has gone from experiencing sunny skies to smoggy streets in less than 24 hours, so what gives? 

On Sunday (Mar. 19) night a special air quality statement was put out for the region, warning residents of low-hanging pollutants that could cause sickness. 

As drivers started their morning commutes on Monday (Mar. 20) morning, the streets greeted them with hazy smog hanging right above their heads.

U18 AAA Rangers announce new head coach

The U18 AAA Strike Group Rangers will have a new voice behind the bench next season. 

Last week it was announced that Mason Hawkes will take over as the team's head coach. 

Hawkes will replace Brett Cox, who is moving into a technical director role. 

"He did a great job with this team, but he decided to take on a new role," said Hawkes. "That opened up the U18 job for me, so I have some big shoes to fill but I'm excited about it."

Changes have been made to the Parks Canada reservation system, so how does that affect eager campers wanting to book at Elk Island National Park? 

A new online system came into effect earlier this week and will stagger reservation dates for parks across the country. 

Elk Island National Park's launch date will be March 30. 

"They've improved the software on the new reservation system just to be able to handle all the incoming reservations," said Jana Cornoc, the visitor services supervisor for the park. 

"It's definitely a bit more streamlined." 

Farmers encouraged to talk to MP's about supporting Bill C-234

The Western Canadian Wheat Growers (WCWG) and the Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) are raising awareness for a campaign by the Agriculture Carbon Alliance (ACA) calling on politicians to support Bill C234.

Bill C-234 (an Act to amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act) still has to go through a third and final vote in the House of Commons.

The GGC encourages producers to highlight the importance of the bill to their Members of Parliament.

CP Rails takeover of Kansas City Southern Railway has been approved

CP has been given the green light in its takeover of Kansas City Southern Railway.

The US$31 billion purchase will create the first single rail line connecting Canada, the U.S. and Mexico covering nearly 33,000 kilometres of track.

The merged railway will be known as Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), with CP's chief executive Keith Creel as CEO, and Calgary as the global headquarters.

CP's assistant vice-president of sales and marketing for Canadian grain, Elizabeth Hucker says the new CPKC will benefit Canadian grain shippers by opening new markets and ports.

The warmest days are tonight and next Thursday (Mar. 23), which are both expected to hit a high of plus 6.

As for the coldest, that will be on Sunday (Mar. 19) with a low of minus 12 overnight. Although tonight has only a low of minus 9, the wind chill will feel closer to minus 12.
