Mavericks beat 57's in pitcher's duel
A pitcher's duel in the WCBL last night.
Adam Korte and Luis Diaz went toe-to-toe for 8 innings in a 1-1 tie between the Swift Current 57's and Medicine Hat Mavericks.
Pinch runner Yusei Uzawa then scored in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Medicine Hat a 2-1 extra innings win.
Korte pitched nine complete innings for the 57's allowing a run, 5 hits, 4 walks, and striking out 8.
Diaz went 8 innings allowing a run on 2 hits with 9 strikeouts.
Trigg Mapes scored the only run of the game for Swift Current.
Former Broncos captain new Calgary Hitmen coach
Dustin Friesen is back in the WHL.
The former captain of the Swift Current Broncos is now head coach of the Calgary Hitmen.
“We are excited to welcome Dustin as our new head coach,” said Hitmen General Manager Garry Davidson in a media release. “He is a proven winner at every level in his playing career and has had a direct impact on championship teams in the past two seasons.
“He has a passion to develop players and to create a strong culture. We know he will lead and guide our team and build on our progression and success from last season.”

Brock Wall got to celebrate for a couple of reasons last night.
Bailey +4 at Canadian Amateur Golf Championship
Shaunavon's Corey Bailey is in the middle of the pack after the first day of the Canadian Amateur Golf Championship.
He's tied for 136th out of 264 golfers after a first round 74 at the Rivermead Golf Club in Gatineau.
Quebec's Thomas Grenier leads after shooting a course record 62 at the Rivermead.
The tournament is being played between the Gatineau course and the Royal Ottawa Golf Club.
Bailey and Team Saskatchewan sit 7th in the Inter-Provincial Team Championship at +5.
Gull Lake takes 18U Tier 5 gold
Another Gull Lake team took home a provincial baseball championship over the weekend.
The Greyhounds claimed the Saskatchewan 18U AA Tier 5 provincial crown.
Gull Lake went 4-1 at the event.
They beat the Saskatoon Brave Bandits 19-2 and Weyburn Beavers 14-5 to open the round robin.
Gull Lake then fell 9-7 to the Tisdale Rangers.
The Greyhounds rebounded with a 7-4 win over Eston in the semifinal and 8-1 win over the Saskatoon Blue Jays Crush in the gold medal game.
Team Canada claims fifth place at 2025 Junior Roller Derby World Cup in Australia
Team Canada competed with determination and skill at the 2025 Junior Roller Derby World Cup, held July 26 to 28 at Mount Warren Sports Centre in Queensland, Australia.
Among the team was Estevan’s own Cecilia McCaskill, representing the Southeast on the international stage.
Playing in the Open Division, Canada showed strong teamwork and fast-paced action in a series of exciting matches.
Eight sacks are great as Roughriders beat Elks 21-18
With scorching temperatures on Friday night, the only thing generating as much heat as the evening sun was the Saskatchewan Roughriders defensive line, causing havoc with eight sacks, on their way to a 21-18 win over the Edmonton Elks.
It was a low scoring start with the Elks leading 4-1 after the first 15 minutes.
The Roughriders pulled ahead in the second quarter with a 15-yard touchdown reception from Samuel Emilus.
Update: 57's coaches suspended following incident with Saskatoon

The WCBL has released the full video of Friday's game.
Hostilities started in the top of the 9th inning when 57's reliever Hunter Mark hit Berries outfielder, and Swift Current native, Ethan Murdoch with a pitch.
Tensions were boiling over as umpires warned both teams at the time.
Berries pitcher Alex Chumrau then hit 57's all-star catcher Luis Ayala in the bottom of the 9th inning.
Miller Express lose two of three over the weekend
The Moose Jaw Miller Express came away with just one win in three games over the weekend.
On Friday night, Moose Jaw picked up a 13-6 victory over the Weyburn Beavers. The game was tied 2-2 after the first inning. Austin Gurney doubled to centre field to score Thomas Soto for Moose Jaw’s first run. Gurney later scored on a Weyburn error.
Weyburn took a 4-2 lead after three innings, but the Miller Express answered with three runs in the top of the fourth. Soto hit a double that drove home Tanner DeGrazia, Andy Rivas and Ben Waliczek.
Record medal haul for Piranhas at regionals
The Cochrane Piranhas made waves at the ASSA Region E swim meet over the weekend, racking up a staggering 132 medals and rewriting the club record book in the process.
The two-day meet featured six clubs from Calgary and the surrounding area: the Calgary Swordfish, Calgary Tritons, Okotoks Stingrays, Didsbury Aqua Jets, High River Otters, and the Piranhas — who stole the spotlight.
