Josh Guenter will represent PCs in Borderland during next provincial election

Josh Guenter's name will be on the ballot for the October 2023 provincial election after securing the Progressive Conservative party nomination earlier this week for the Borderland constituency. This will be the MLA's second general election, after first being elected in 2019.

Students ponder future options following annual Post-Secondary Day/Local Career Showcase

Students at W.C. Miller Collegiate are pondering their options for the future following the school's annual Post-Secondary Day/Local Career Showcase event on Tuesday.

Presentations were made by various post-secondary institutions and trades programming, as well as local career options like Golden West and Canada Border Services Agency.

Grade 11 student Parker Schmidt went into the day hoping to expand his knowledge of theatre and film opportunities.

Schroeder, Wiebe address electorate at all-candidates forum

Altona's new Mayor, Harv Schroeder, and the Municipality of Rhineland's returning Reeve, Don Wiebe, had the opportunity to address the crowd at Thursday night's all candidates forum. Both were invited to speak at the Altona and District Cahmber of Commerce organized event.

Schroeder was acclaimed after no other candidates came forward to replace former Mayor Al Friesen who did not seek re-election.

Shannon Martin joins PC nomination race in Midland

Current McPhilips MLA Shannon Martin is seeking the Progressive Conservative (PC) party nomination for the Midland constituency.
    
Previously he represented part of Midland when it fell within the Morris riding, which was eliminated after electoral boundaries were redrawn following the 2016 provincial election, with much of the former constituency being moved within what's now known as Midland. Martin was first elected to the Manitoba Legislature in 2014 in Morris and reelected in 2016. He was elected again in 2019, but in McPhilips.

Federal funding to push Meridian Exhibition Centre project further ahead

The Mayor for the City of Winkler says last week's funding announcement by the Federal government has moved the overall Meridian Exhibition Centre project ahead by years. The feds have approved $7.9 million to support phase 2 of the effort which will see large-scale renovations take place at the Centennial Area.

Millions of kilograms of flood debris collected in the R.M. of Morris

To date, 40 million kgs of debris left behind by the spring flood has been cleaned up in the R.M. of Morris and dropped at the Rosenort Landfill, according to Reeve Ralph Groening. 

"As a matter of fact, we are running into capacity issues because of that," he added. 

Groening noted, the clean up has proven to be a huge task, and crews continue to work. 

"We were hopeful to complete it by the end of this year but of course, realisticly we knew that wouldn't happen. Next year the work will continue."

A Positive Spin on Construction Season

Progress is being made on some new pathways, and street overlay and patching projects in Winkler. 

"It is awesome to see all this work done. It has gone basically without a hitch, and we're grateful for the contractors who are there to do the work for us," noted Mayor Harder.

Some of the companies doing the work are from outside of the City. One, noted Harder, is Bayview Construction based out of Oak Bluff.

"They actually said, 'we want to come back to Winkler. The people here are so nice'," he said.
