Update: RCMP locate missing 38-year-old

Maskwacis RCMP have located missing 38-year-old Miranda Stick.

Miranda was last seen on Aug. 24, in Wetaskiwin and there was concern for her well-being.

RCMP thanked the public and media for their help.

Alberta government workers approve mediated deal, strike averted

A new contract has been reached between some 23,000 civil servants and the Alberta government, averting a strike that could’ve happened as soon as next week.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees says the mediator-recommended deal passed with 63 per cent of voting members in favour and 36.5 per cent opposed.

In a release Wednesday, the union said 71 per cent of eligible members voted.

The affected employees include administrative workers, some Alberta Sheriffs, social workers and provincial wildfire fighters.

Unemployment rate climbed to 7.1 per cent in August as economy lost 66,000 jobs

The Canadian economy lost jobs for the second month in a row as the unemployment rate climbed to its highest level since May 2016, excluding the pandemic period.

Statistics Canada said Friday the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.1 per cent in August, its highest level since August 2021, as the economy lost 66,000 jobs for the month.

The report follows the July labour force survey that showed a loss of 41,000 jobs and an unemployment rate of 6.9 per cent.

Go treasure hunting in Clive this Saturday

Clive residents and visitors will be able to hunt for bargains Saturday during the village-wide garage sale.

The annual community event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and offers shoppers a chance to discover unique finds.

Benalto’s Train Acres hosts 1st annual fundraiser in support of Alberta children's hospitals

A dream for a Lacombe County couple, more than a decade in the making is about to come to life.

Train Acres Miniature Railway, located just west of Sylvan Lake in Benalto, will host its first annual fundraiser for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation on September 6 and 7.

The miniature railway was developed by Ernie and Dorinda Beskowiney, inspired by their grandson’s care at a children’s hospital in Ottawa.

Red Deer Service Clubs continue annual Service Day tradition

Several Red Deer service clubs are teaming up again this September for their fourth annual Service Club Day.

The Rotary Clubs of Red Deer, Red Deer East and Red Deer Sunrise, along with the Optimist and Kinsmen clubs, will carry out projects to support local non-profits throughout the month.

The campaign kicks off Sept. 8 at 3 p.m. with a proclamation from Mayor Ken Johnston in front of City Hall.

Each service club has selected a non-profit to receive $2,000 and up to 15 volunteers.

Red Deer Public Schools has alerts for late buses

Parents of students who ride Red Deer Public Schools (RDPSD) buses can now receive real-time notifications about delays and cancellations.

The division said families can sign up for two systems designed to keep them informed if their child’s bus is running late or not operating.

Through the School Bus Monitor, run by Prairie Bus Lines, parents can enroll to receive email alerts if a bus is delayed by 10 minutes or more.

Bondi says human smuggling across the border with Canada is getting worse

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said Thursday human smuggling across the border with Canada is getting worse — and that traffickers are looking north following the Trump administration's crackdown at the border with Mexico.

"The northern border, it always has been, but it's gotten much worse, much more prevalent because … it's a multibillion-dollar business, the smuggling of drugs, guns and humans," Bondi said during a news conference in Tampa, Fla.

Officials, Indigenous leaders respond to mass stabbing on Manitoba First Nation

Messages of condolences and support poured in for a Manitoba First Nation after a mass stabbing on Thursday, including from a First Nation in Saskatchewan that experienced one of its own exactly three years earlier.

Police say eight people were found severely injured in two homes on Hollow Water First Nation, northeast of Winnipeg.

An 18-year-old woman died while the suspect, her 26-year-old brother, died after the stolen vehicle he was driving collided with a vehicle driven by a police officer responding to the attack.
