Alberta premier's request for separation referendum question approval rebuffed

Alberta's chief electoral officer is rebuffing calls from Premier Danielle Smith and her justice minister to reverse course and sign off on a proposed referendum question on separation.

On social media, Smith and Justice Minister Mickey Amery said earlier Tuesday that Albertans should be able to embark on gathering signatures "without needless bureaucratic red tape or court applications slowing the process."

City of Red Deer to allow free downtown parking with handicap placard

Beginning August 1, individuals displaying a valid handicap placard will be permitted to park for free in any on-street parking stall in Red Deer, not just those designated as accessible.

This change is intended to make parking more convenient and flexible for accessible parkers and comes in response to feedback from residents and visitors.

“We heard from our community that accessible parkers needed more flexibility when parking downtown,” said Jill Manning, Parking and Licensing Supervisor.

Premier Danielle Smith and one of her ministers are calling on Alberta's electoral officer to reverse course and sign off on a proposed referendum question on separation, saying it shouldn't be held back by red tape.

This week, chief electoral officer Gordon McClure announced he had referred the proposed question to the courts so a judge could decide if the question contravenes Canada's Constitution.

Vandalism closes Penhold splash park until further notice

The Town of Penhold is reporting that the splash park will be closed until further notice due to vandalism in the washroom at the Lincoln Street Recreation Centre.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) requires washrooms to be available during splash park operations, so the park will remain closed until repairs are completed for the damage caused by yesterday’s (July 28) vandalism.

Footage from CCTV cameras at the recreation centre is currently being reviewed by Protective Services.

CFL makes history with first all-female sideline crew

The Thursday, July 24 game marked a meaningful milestone for women in football, as an all-female CFL support crew took the sidelines for the first time.

This historic moment took place at the Calgary Stampeders game, when they hosted the Montreal Alouettes.

It was a significant occasion for women in the CFL, as the last time women took the field in an official capacity was in 2019.

Georgina Paull and Emily Clarke were the first to set foot on the field with their fellow officials for a preseason game in Calgary.

Golf cart donation makes Ellis Nature Centre more accessible

The Ellis Nature Centre (ENC), located outside Lacombe, has announced that it now has a golf cart available to transport visitors with limited mobility around the site, making the facility even more accessible.

The purchase of the cart was made possible thanks to the generosity of Gordon Kurucz, who passed away but left a donation through his estate.

Kurucz was known to love spending time outdoors and in nature, though accessibility to certain places was a concern for him.

Classic rodeo returns to Ermineskin Cree Nation with weekend-long family event

A weekend of rodeo, chuckwagon racing and cultural celebration is set to take place at the Panee Memorial Agriplex on the Ermineskin Cree Nation.

The Classic Rodeo will run August 1 to 3 and feature events for all ages, according to event organizer Willie Evans.

“It’s not just rodeo. We have chuckwagon racing with the All Pro Canadian Chuckwagon Association,” said Evans. “We have Indian relay races with the Buffalo Warriors Indian Relay Association. And we have a McDonald Rodeo open amateur rodeo.”
