Local theatre group wins CAT award

The winners of the 2024 Calgary Community Theatre Awards, also known as the CAT awards, were recently announced, and some locals were among the recipients.

These awards are produced by the Calgary-ACTS (Calgary's Alliance of Community Theatres), and their focus is to promote community theatre in the Calgary Metropolitan Region.

They determine the CAT Awards winners through the combined process of public nominations and adjudication.

HTA Knights football put on a clinic before they head to California

The Holy Trinity Academy (HTA) Knights football team put on a clinic against Grande Prairie's St. Joseph Catholic High School Celtics with a 41-7 win on Friday (August 23).

The Knights ran away with the game, quite literally, as they put up an astonishing 418 rushing yards. HTA almost doubled St. Joseph's total yards as they came away with 465 to Grande Prairie's 250.

HTA finished with three conversions out of four on third down and didn't give up a single turnover in the game.

The game was played at Tarus Field in Fort Saskatchewan. 

Okotoks Oilers strike a deal with Blackfalds ahead of season opener

Two BCHL Alberta Division rivals have struck a deal, with the Okotoks Oilers sending Thomas Matte to the Blackfalds Bulldogs in exchange for 2006-born forward Otto Hanson.

Matte played parts of two seasons with the Oilers with his debut coming in the 2022-2023 season and playing in four games for the Green and Gold in their last full season in the AJHL.

Study finds no evidence Tories were behind bot campaign that posted about Poilievre

There is no evidence that indicates the federal Conservatives were behind a bot network on social media that praised a Pierre Poilievre rally, a new study has found. 

The Canadian Digital Media Research Network launched an investigation after hundreds of X accounts posted about the Conservative leader's July rally in Kirkland Lake, Ont., all using the same language with phrases like "buzzing with energy" and "as a northern Ontarian."

High River is looking for input on key corridor 

The Town of High River is wanting to develop options for a key east-west corridor in town.

The High Country Drive extends from Longview Trail NW to Centre Street N/Highway 2A and serves the northwest quadrant of town.

Due to concerns they heard about that road, the Town is looking for input from residents on how to improve the road for those who use it, whether they are biking, walking, or driving.

Fahr Brewery plans to keep recently acquired OT Brewing brand alive

A Calgary brewery is getting a fresh start under a Foothills banner.

Earlier in the summer, Fahr Brewery in Diamond Valley announced it had acquired OT Brewing Co.

The Calgary-based brewer has developed a dedicated following since its founding in 2018, as evidenced by the relief expressed by many on social media following the news that OT would be continuing under the Fahr roof.

Just a few months prior, OT announced the closure of their taproom, to the disappointment of many.

First parent meeting for new season with Longview 4-H Beef Club is coming up

The Longview 4-H Beef Club is holding its first parent meeting of the 2024-2025 year at the Longview Hall on September 12 at 7:00 p.m.

Ross Lewis who is with the Longview 4-H Beef Club explains what parents can expect from the first meeting of the season.

"Here pretty quick on September 12th at seven o'clock at the Longview Hall, we are going to have our parent and organizational meeting where we will go through all the important dates of the year, kind of expectations, and get that all nailed down," Lewis said.

Emergency crews respond to rollover on Highway 2 south of Okotoks

A single-vehicle rollover south of Okotoks is causing delays on Highway 2.

Local RCMP were called at 11:15 a.m. about the roll-over, and EMS confirmed that there were two people involved who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Crews are on scene at the incident, which is affecting the southbound lanes just south of the Aldersyde overpass.

CGC revokes grain licence for Purely Canada Foods Corp

Farmers owed money for unpaid deliveries to Purely Canada Foods Corp. are encouraged to contact the Canadian Grain Commission immediately.

The CGC revoked the grain dealer licence and primary elevator licences for Purely Canada Foods Corp. in Avonlea,  Kindersley, and Lajord, Saskatchewan as of 11:59 pm last night (August 27).

The company may owe grain farmers in Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta money for grain deliveries.
