World Humanitarian Day is designated as day to honour people who risk everything to do good.

Being a humanitarian should be the world’s safest job, instead, it has become one of the most dangerous.

From conflict zones to disaster-stricken regions, aid workers face increasing threats, including violence, abduction, and harassment. According to the Aid Worker Security Database, 265 aid workers have died this year so far increasing the likelihood that 2025 will surpass 2024 as the deadliest year on record (383 deaths) for humanitarian workers.

"This work is rooted in compassion for people in need, and shouldn’t cost lives," says Stefan Epp-Koop, Canadian Foodgrains Bank senior manager of humanitarian programs. "I’ve talked to many humanitarian workers who are making significant sacrifices to provide assistance for people in need, such as living apart from their families, and risking their physical and mental wellbeing. And with so many cuts to international aid, they’re also the ones that must turn people away when resources are limited."

Whether in Sudan, Gaza, Haiti, or Afghanistan, the courage and commitment of humanitarian workers deserve not only our protection, but also our partnership.

“Humanitarian workers choose to go where others either can’t or won’t, to deliver food assistance, medical help, and hope to the families they serve,” says Epp-Koop. “They’re the first to arrive and the last to leave in times of crisis, and their safety cannot be a negotiable factor.”

The 2025 theme ‘Strengthening global solidarity and empowering local communities’, as set out by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, reminds us that humanitarian work is most effective when rooted in collaboration. Beyond providing funding and support for local partners, it’s about standing in solidarity with communities – listening to their needs, amplifying local voices, and working together to co-create lasting solutions.

This World Humanitarian Day, we honour all humanitarian workers on the frontlines, including our members’ partners, who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the mission of ending hunger and poverty.
